SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcats, Spartans bounced from Cedar Falls bracket
The Marshalltown and Grundy Center volleyball teams both went 2-2 at the Cedar Falls Tiger Invitational on Saturday, each falling in the first round of bracketed play.
The Bobcats (8-12) were defeated by Class 5A No. 7 Cedar Falls in the quarterfinals, 21-12, 21-16, after going 2-1 in pool play. Marshalltown topped Janesville (21-15, 17-21, 15-13) and Urbandale (19-21, 21-11, 15-8) but lost to No. 15 Linn-Mar (22-20, 17-21, 15-8) before advancing to the championship bracket.
Class 2A No. 12 Grundy Center (17-10) also went 2-1 in pool play with wins over Davenport North (21-11, 21-12) and Cedar Rapids Washington (21-17, 21-11) and a loss to Cedar Falls (21-18, 21-13). The Spartans were swept by 3A No. 3 West Delaware in the championship quarterfinals, 21-13, 21-11.

Redhawks rumble past Wapsie Valley, 22-13
TRAER — The North Tama football team got its third straight win by knocking off Wapsie Valley 22-13 on Friday night.
The Redhawks (3-2) led 14-13 at the half and held the Warriors (3-2) scoreless the rest of the way to end a three-game skid against Wapsie Valley.
Redhawk quarterback Kolt Knaack threw for 165 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score, leading the team with 67 rushing yards. He was 13-for-26 passing with a pair of interceptions and a 50-yard touchdown pass to Josh Dostal.
Dostal scored a defensive TD for the Redhawks, returning a fumble 65 yards for a score.
Gavin Rausch finished with five receptions for 62 yards and Tyrus Luker had three catches for 40 yards. Rausch led the defense as well with 8.5 tackles and Knaack had 7.5 stops, including two for loss. Kayler Morris added an interception.
Wapsie Valley was limited to 177 yards of total offense, with 174 of them coming on the ground. Hunter Curley had 68 yards and a touchdown for the Warriors.
Trojans take down Jesup to move to 4-1
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall football team improved to 4-1 with Friday’s 45-13 Homecoming drubbing of Jesup.
The Trojans, who were rewarded a win against Hampton-Dumont-CAL after the Bulldogs used an ineligible player, outscored Jesup 28-0 in the second half to break open a close game.
West Marshall amassed 513 yards of total offense in balanced fashion, throwing for 249 and rushing for 264. Ben Gonzalez carried 21 times for 161 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Vincent Clawson was 10-for-14 passing with two touchdowns through the air. He also had two short touchdown runs.
Cash Johnson returned an interception 41 yards for the Trojans’ other score.
Jace Eich led the defense with eight tackles, while Dawson Goodman and Michael Lechnir had six stops apiece.
Mustang football shut out by South Hardin
LE GRAND — The East Marshall football team suffered its second straight loss, falling 48-0 to South Hardin in Friday’s Class 1A District 4 clash.
The visiting Tigers (5-0) piled up 483 yards of total offense as quarterback Peyton Welch was 15-for-20 for 251 yards and two touchdowns. Ethan Lindsey had four catches for 135 yards and a touchdown to lead the way.
Jaxson Drury carried the ball 12 times for 166 yards and three touchdowns as well for the Tigers.
East Marshall quarterback Jake Farrington finished 10-for-24 for 128 yards. Blake Neuroth had four receptions for 68 yards, and Cody Weaver had two grabs for 45 yards. Drew Wheater carried 12 times for 68 yards to lead the Mustangs in the backfield.
Weaver and Wheater both led the defense with 6.5 tackles.
Hoop Memorial Golf Tournament slated for Saturday
The Frank Lewis Glick American Legion Post 46 is hosting a Memorial Golf Tournament for Al Hoop on Saturday, Oct. 5.
Hoop, who passed away last March, was a Marshalltown native and long-time City Councilman who also spent three decades coaching multiple sports at MHS.
The tournament will be a four-person best shot nine-hole affair. Cost is $30 which includes green fees, a cart and lunch.
