SPORTS SHORTS: Redhawks rattle off sweep of GMG netters

GARWIN — The Class 1A No. 10 North Tama volleyball team handed GMG its first Iowa Star Conference South Division loss, defeating the Wolverines in three sets here Thursday night.

The visiting Redhawks (12-12, 3-1) ran away with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-14 victory.

Kruiz Ewoldt led North Tama with 19 kills, and Cayleigh Heller had 10 kills. Lily Sell chipped in six kills and Heller, the setter, had 26 assists.

Addison Hochstetler led the Redhawk defense with 22 digs, Kylie Calderwood had 12 and Haydn Wilson 11. Heller, Kahlia Even and Briar Blake had one block apiece. Calderwood served 23-for-23 with seven of North Tama’s 14 aces.

Five different players had three kills each to lead GMG (11-4, 2-1), and junior setter Hadlee Hempy tallied 10 assists.

Olivia Maddux led the defense with eight digs and Landry August added six more. Hempy served 12-for-12 as the Wolverines went 47-for-51 behind the stripe, but no aces in the loss.

West Marshall volleyball takes down Thunder

DES MOINES — The West Marshall volleyball team remained unbeaten in Heart of Iowa Conference play with a 3-0 sweep over Grand View Christian on Thursday night.

The visiting Trojans (6-10) prevailed 25-20, 25-18, 25-17 to go to 3-0 in HOIAC play.

Amelia Ranson led West Marshall with 12 kills, Avery Evertsen had seven and Lily Zahnd five. Zahnd and Natalie Nichols both had 11 assists.

Riley Randall paced the Trojan defense with 23 digs, and Evertsen led the way with five blocks. Reese Jensen served 10-for-10 with three aces and Zahnd was 10-for-11 with one ace. Randall went 8-for-8 with two aces.

Spartans split in NICL volleyball triangular

DIKE — The Class 2A No. 14 Grundy Center volleyball team split a pair of NICL contests on Thursday night, beating No. 9 Sumner-Fredericksburg and falling to No. 6 Dike-New Hartford.

Against Sumner-Fredericksburg, the Spartans prevailed 26-24, 25-20. Ryanne Brubaker led Grundy Center with nine kills and three blocks, while Paige Venenga contributed six kills. Caturella Brown had eight assists and Lauren Zajac added seven.

Defensively, Kayden Muller and Raelyn Steinmeyer made eight digs apiece, and Brown added two blocks. Venenga served 13-for-13 with an ace in the win.

Dike-New Hartford turned back the Spartans in straight sets, 25-17, 25-20. Brubaker had eight kills and two blocks to pace Grundy Center, while three players — Trinity Jirovsky, Jenna Blythe and Venenga — had three kills apiece. Brown finished with 10 assists and Zajac had seven.

Steinmeyer scored 13 digs to lead the Spartan defense. Venenga served 10-for-10, while Blythe was 8-for-8 with two aces.
