IOWA CITY — The Iowa women’s basketball team ended the first quarter on a 23-2 run after trailing Toledo early, running past the Rockets for a 94-57 triumph on Wednesday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Five players scored in double figures for the Hawkeyes, who improved to 3-0 under first-year head coach Jan Jensen. Hannah Stuelke tallied team-highs of 17 points and nine rebounds to push Iowa past the visiting Rockets (1-1).

Lucy Olsen and Taylor McCabe scored 14 points apiece, Sydney Affolter added 11 and Addison O’Grady finished with 10 points for the Hawkeyes.

McCabe was 4-for-8 from 3-point range, accounting for Iowa’s only successful tries from distance. The Hawkeyes went 28-for-32 from the free-throw line, with Stuelke going 9-for-9 at the stripe.

Sammi Mikonowicz led the Rockets with 17 points and Kendall Carruthers added 15. Toledo shot 21-for-67 from the floor (31.3 percent) in the loss.

“I was really happy with our defensive intensity,” Jensen said. “We’ve tried to make strides on that side of the ball and we are seeing that come to fruition early this season.”

Iowa faces in-state rival Drake on Sunday in a 2 p.m. game at the Knapp Center in Des Moines.
