Iowa women pull away from Cougs
IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa women’s basketball team defeated Washington State on Sunday afternoon, 72-43, inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. With the win, Iowa remains unbeaten and improves to 6-0 on the season.
Senior Lucy Olsen led the way for the Hawkeyes with 17 points, five assists, a season-high eight rebounds and a steal. Senior Addison O’Grady followed with 14 points and seven rebounds.
Iowa outscored Washington State 37-9 over the second and third quarters to overcome a 19-18 deficit after the opening period.
The Hawkeyes held Wazzu scoreless for the first four minutes of the second to make an 8-0 run, and Washington State (2-3) never recovered.
The Cougars shot 2-for-16 in the second quarter and 2-for-18 from the field in the third.
Iowa eventually led by as many as 34 points in the final stanza.
Tara Wallack and Jenna Villa scored 11 points apiece to lead Washington State, which was held to its season-low scoring output. Iowa has won all six of its games so far by double figures.
Hannah Stuelke finished with 11 points and six rebounds, and Sydney Affolter finished with eight points and eight boards for the Hawkeyes,
Teagan Mallegni chipped in six points, Taylor Stremlow added five points and six boards, and Ava Heiden got four points and three blocked shots.
“That’s what I loved about this game. Our freshmen stepped up when we needed them to,” said Iowa head coach Jan Jensen. “I was able to try a few different combinations today and we learned a ton about our team. Our team is excited to get to Cancun and compete against quality competition.”
The Hawkeyes travel to Mexico to face Rhode Island in the Cancun Challenge on Thanksgiving Day at 5:30 p.m. at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya.
