Tiger women win a pair of home games

The Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team bagged back-to-back home wins with Saturday’s triumph over the College of DuPage and Monday’s victory over the Clarke JV.

On Saturday, the Tigers (3-1) took control early and turned away the Chaparrals of DuPage. MCC led 15-8 after the first quarter and 26-21 at the half before outscoring DuPage 32-13 in the second half.

Destiny Sao-Martinez came in off the bench for MCC and scored a team-leading 13 points thanks to four 3-pointers while also adding four steals and three assists.

Shenell Stewarwt had 12 points and five rebounds, while Mia Sao-Martinez and Kimari Hall had 11 points apiece. Kenijae Cherry tallied six points and a team-high eight rebounds, and Nunu Johnson chipped in five points and six boards.

“I’m extremely proud of our team playing a complete game,” said MCC head coach Dylan Longley. “We got contributions from everyone and we played true team basketball.”

College of DuPage shot just 5-for-28 from 3-point range in the loss. Madison Dubiel led the Chaparrals with nine points.

In Monday’s home triumph, the Tigers rallied from a three-point deficit going into the fourth quarter to take the win.

“It was a gritty win where we didn’t play our best brand of basketball but at the end of the day we got the W,” Longley said.

Mia Sao-Martinez led the Tigers with 16 points and Stewart added 13 more. Additional scoring contributions came from Destiny Sao-Martinez (9), Jalen Shaw (8) and Hall (7).

Clarke was led by the tandem of Reese Ryan and Breckan Stewart with 21 and 20 points, respectively.

MCC men fall on the road

ESTHERVILLE — The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, falling 78-76 to Bryant and Stratton College.

MCC (3-1) led 39-27 at the half but got outscored 51-37 in the second half by the Bobcats (2-1).

Daniel Sykes led Bryant and Stratton with 16 points, Robinson scored 14 off the bench, while Karter Seawright and Zaharee Maddox contributed 12 points each.

Justice Small scored 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting to lead MCC. Jayden Hill added 14 points, Richard Udoagwa finished with 13, and DJ Hamilton had 11. Antwan Bridgett chipped in nine points and five assists, while Antoine Glasper added seven assists, six rebounds and two points off the bench.

The Tigers are at home this weekend for the Emerson Classic. MCC meets St. John’s Academy-DME on Friday night at 7 p.m. and John Wood CC on Saturday at 7 p.m.
