Anderson, Gomez propel Bobcats to second at Pella

PELLA — The Marshalltown boys’ wrestling team crowned two champions en route to a runner-up finish at the Bill Van Horn Invitational on Saturday at Pella High School.

Xayvion Anderson and Johan Gomez emerged atop their respective brackets to lead the Bobcats to second place in the 16-team tournament, totaling 181 points. Cedar Rapids Xavier edged out Marshalltown for the team title with 188.5 points, while Fairfield finished third with 151 points.

South Tama scored 79 points for 13th place.

Anderson, ranked seventh at 165 pounds in Class 3A by IAwrestle, rolled through his bracket with a pair of pins and two more technical falls. Anderson improved to 14-0 by finishing off his weight class with a 15-0 technical fall of Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Marek McNamara.

Gomez, rated ninth at 190, moved to 12-2 for the year with a 4-0 day. He started with a pair of pins, added a major decision over 12th-ranked Logan Bruxvoort of Pella, 16-7, in the semifinals, before beating Xavier’s Dusty Cook in the finals, 10-9.

Nicholas Wise (13-1) made the 144 finals before suffering his first loss of the season, a 3-0 decision to 1A No. 5 Ryan Groom of North Mahaska.

Jaxson Hinkle earned a third-place finish with a 3-1 day on the mats at heavyweight, while fourth-place finishes went to Nicholas Million at 106, Colby Cross at 138, and Ignacio Macias at 215. Lucas Bantz took fifth at 132, while Kager Kramer did the same at 150.

South Tama’s top finish came from Clayton Babinat at 138, as he earned silver with a 3-1 day on the mats. He scored two minor decisions before beating North Mahaska’s Joel DeJong by major decision, 14-6, in the semifinals. Oskaloosa’s Kaiden Parker, ranked ninth in 2A, outscored Blocker in the finals, 21-5.

Third-place finishes for the Trojans were earned by Ramiro Saquic Xirum (113) and Marcus Bear (175).

MHS girls fifth in closely contested Boone Invite

BOONE — The Marshalltown girls’ wrestling team finished just three points out of second place but settled for fifth at the Boone Invitational on Saturday.

Ridge View won the team title with 174 points, but the next four places were separated by just three points. Manson-Northwest Webster was second with 147.5, Ames was third with 146, Nevada was fourth with 145, and the Bobcats were fifth with 144.5 in the 12-team tournament.

Nintee Tarr claimed Marshalltown’s lone title in her return to the mats, going 4-0 to top the 145-pound bracket. All four matches ended in pinfall, finishing with a second-period pin of Independence’s CeCe Priebe in the championship bout.

Genevieve Lantigua (170) and Olivia Wise (190) were runners-up in their respective brackets. Lantigua pinned her semifinal opponent in 22 seconds to reach the finals before falling in the first period to Norwalk’s Katie Liedtke. Wise had a pin and a technical fall to reach the title bout before falling in the first period to Class 2A No. 5 Cadence Heggen of Boone.

Fourth-place finishes went to Natalie Nickey (100), Madylin McDonald (125) and Addyson Lovelace (140). Maelee Corona came away with fifth place at 105, while Adele Beek (120) picked up sixth place.
