Bobcats fall short against Riverhawks
MASON CITY — The Marshalltown boys’ basketball team got stuck in a funk and couldn’t shake loose until it was too late, falling 64-42 to Mason City in Thursday’s makeup game.
The Bobcats (2-4, 0-1) scored the first basket of the game but Mason City (2-1, 1-0) got the next 10 points before Marshalltown made it back into the scoring column. The Riverhawks pulled ahead to a 16-7 first-quarter advantage and held off the Bobcats the rest of the way in the Iowa Alliance Conference North Division opener for both teams.
Ty Sanchez-Evans scored a game-high 16 points to lead Mason City, while Marcele Whitner added 13. Jameer Falls and Drayden Witt pitched in with 10 points apiece.
Drake Gersema got 13 points and four rebounds to pace Marshalltown, while Jacob Hayes had 10 points. LaMar Johnson added seven points and Kyle Smith finished with six.
The Bobcats are back at home Friday for a conference clash with Fort Dodge.
