MCC thwarts Reivers for second time ever, 61-59
The Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team defeated Iowa Western for just the second time in school history, topping the Reivers 61-59 in Thursday’s Iowa Community College Athletic Conference clash.
Shenell Stewart scored a team-leading 20 points for the Tigers (9-3, 1-1), whose only other win over Iowa Western was in 2015. Stewart added seven rebounds, six assists and four steals as MCC grabbed a big lead early and clung to it for the remainder.
The Tigers led 22-7 after the opening quarter but got outscored in each of the final three periods.
MCC had to rally in the waning moments after falling behind by three points in the fourth qaurter. Destiny Sao-Martinez sank a 3-pointer with 9.4 seconds remaining to tie the score at 59-all, and Abigail Gradwell was fouled setting the screen that got her open. Gradwell was injured on the play, and Jalen Shaw entered to make 1-of-2 free throws.
Iowa Western’s Adelynn Maddox missed a 3-pointer and Kimari Hall secured the rebound, making 1-of-2 free throws for the final score.
Mia Sao-Martinez finished with 16 points, six steals and four assists, while Destiny added 10 points.
Sydney Donaldson led the Reivers (6-6, 0-2) with a game-high 22 points.
MCC visits Southwestern on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game in Creston.
