PREP WRESTLING: STC girls wrestling wins Cedar Rapids Prairie invite

CEDAR RAPIDS — The South Tama girls’ wrestling team took the team title at Cedar Rapids Prairie’s John “Bubba” Randles Winter Classic on Saturday, scoring 207 points behind individual champion Autumn Elsbury.

The Trojans finished ahead of Linn-Mar (186) and host Prairie (170) atop the 26-team tournament, with top-ranked Elsbury winning the 170-pound bracket. She was one of 12 placewinners for STC.

Elsbury improved to 22-0 for the year with three wins — all by first-period pinfall. She finished off her title run with a pin of Western Dubuque’s Ava Pfab — ranked 10th in Class 2A — in 1 minute, 43 seconds.

Livia Smith scored silver at 100, improving to 16-6 for the season. She was pinned in the finals by No. 8 Elizabeth Burns of Prairie.

Brooklyn Mitchell was the runner-up at 130 as well, moving to 19-5 with a 3-1 day of wrestling. She scored three pins before getting pinned by No. 2 Mackenzie Childers of Prairie in the finals.

Paisley Bro scored second-place points at 145 with a 3-1 day that ended with a loss by fall to No. 10 Theresa Gonpue of Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

Abigail Chyma, ranked 10th at 155, took third after a semifinal loss to 1A No. 2 Layna DeMoss of Benton Community. Chyma rebounded to pin Lilly Ness of Williamsburg in the consolation final. Seventh-ranked Kinley Jimenez did the same at 235 for the Trojans, falling to 2A No. 1 Ella Brown of Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the semifinals before pinning Payge Steger of Western Dubuque in the third-place match.

Wheater leads Mustangs at Roland-Story

STORY CITY — East Marshall/GMG had two placewinners as the Mustangs placed 15th out of 19 teams at the Jim Kinyon Norseman Invitational on Saturday at Roland-Story High School.

Drew Wheater was the Mustangs’ lone finalist, reaching the 190-pound title bout with three wins before getting beaten in the finals by Class 2A No. 2 Austin Scranton of Anamosa. Wheater (14-1) — who earned his 100th career win in an NICL triangular last Thursday in Le Grand — lost to Scranton by technical fall, 18-1.

Xavier Slifer placed eighth for the Mustangs at 138, going 3-2 on the day. Slifer (14-3) suffered both of his losses to the same opponent — Cole Eitel of Earlham.

Hayden Boles (113) and Kolten Good (120) both earned a match victory during the day for EM/GMG.

West Marshall girls third at Chariton tournament

CHARITON — The West Marshall girls’ wrestling team took third place at the Warhorse Invitational on Saturday at Chariton High School.

The Trojans totaled 136 points to place third behind Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (231) and Ottumwa (176.5).

Elizabeth Kalinay (20-3) came away with West Marshall’s lone individual title on the day. Ranked fifth in Class 1A by IAwrestle, Kalinay won the 190-pound bracket with four wins by first-period pinfall, concluding with a victory over Colfax-Mingo’s Emmalyn Buchman.

Lillian Fischer (8-6) finished second at 145, scoring two pins to reach the title bout before falling to Kieren Perez of North Mahaska.

Madelyn Thompson (14-9) took third at 135 for the Trojans, losing only to Pekin’s Lila Miller in the semifinals in the middle of a 3-1 day. All three wins for Thompson came by pin.
