SPORTS SHORTS: Pendleton powers GMG girls past Spartans
MAXWELL — The GMG girls’ basketball team took control in the first half and held off Collins-Maxwell for a 34-21 win in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference contest.
The Wolverines (3-5, 2-2) led 20-7 at the half and maintained the margin for the divisional victory.
Makayla Pendleton posted up for a game-high 19 points to lead GMG, shooting 8-of-12 from the field. Skyler Murty tallied eight points and a team-leading 10 rebounds, while Rhianna Murty pulled down nine boards.
Rebels run past South Hardin in second half
REINBECK — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ basketball team overcame a slim halftime deficit for a 57-45 win over South Hardin in Tuesday’s NICL West clash.
The Rebels (4-1, 2-1) won the second half 32-19 to overcome South Hardin’s 26-25 advantage at the intermission.
Drew Eilers piled up a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds to lead G-R. Brandon Mathern made four 3-pointers on his way to 12 points and five assists, while Michael Boyd had 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Rebels. Austen Mathern added eight points, and Cameron Sieh had six points.
Big third quarter lifts Mustang boys
ACKLEY — A hot start to the second half powered East Marshall to a 54-40 victory over AGWSR at AGWSR High School on Tuesday.
Cael Curphy scored 14 points for the Mustangs (2-4, 1-1 NICL West) and Jackson Bidwell added 12 points. East Marshall led 21-12 at halftime but had an explosive 21-9 advantage in the third quarter to put the game well out of reach.
Redhawks outlast Meskwaki boys in league play
MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — Four players scored in double figures as North Tama boys basketball bested Meskwaki 65-53 in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division showdown.
North Tama (4-2, 3-1) totaled 17 steals against the winless Warriors (0-4, 0-4).
Josh Dostal led the visiting Redhawks with 19 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and five steals. Kayvin Morris had 16 points and eight boards, and Kayler Morris added 12 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. Brayton Cibula contributed 12 points and nine boards.
Wolverines can’t catch Collins-Maxwell in defeat
MAXWELL — The GMG boys’ basketball team rallied but couldn’t catch Collins-Maxwell in a 57-52 loss in Iowa Star Conference action here Tuesday.
The unbeaten Spartans (6-0, 3-0) led 30-21 at the half before getting outscored 31-27 in the second half by the visiting Wolverines (1-6, 0-4).
Grady Dieleman compiled 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Rider Kupka had 16 points and 13 boards for GMG. Colin Teske chipped in nine points.
Ian Beattie led Collins-Maxwell with 21 points.
North Tama boys sweep Belle Plaine quad
BELLE PLAINE — North Tama boys wrestling went 3-0 at a quadrangular at Belle Plaine High School on Tuesday.
The Redhawks defeated South Hardin-BCLUW, 39-33; dropped BGM, 39-23; and skirted past the hosts, 28-24.
Maxon Monat (113 pounds), Drayke Dvorak (126), Berkley Dvorak (132) and Kolt Knaack (150) all went 3-0 for North Tama, including three head-to-head victories for the Dvoraks and Knaack.
SH-BCLUW went 0-3, falling to Belle Plaine 48-30 and BGM 45-35.
William Patterson (190), Edwin Wanken (285) and Parker Pagel (138) went 3-0 for the Storm.
Storm girls pin down Redhawks
BELLE PLAINE — South Hardin-BCLUW girls wrestling had the roster depth to sneak out a 30-24 victory over North Tama at a triangular at Belle Plaine High School on Tuesday night that also featured BGM.
BGM won the three-way dance with a 33-18 victory over North Tama and a 30-18 win over the Storm.
The Storm and Redhawks split their head-to-head matches: Ceanna White (125 pounds) and Leila Wedgwood (135) won their matches by fall for the Storm; North Tama’s Briar Blake (190) and Olivia Youngblood (120) were also pinfall winners.
Taya Hollingsworth, Sisse Levison, and Kaitlynn Dickes won by forfeit for the Storm to push them over the top.
North Tama’s Jocelyn Harms and Blake scored pins against BGM and Addison Hochstetler added a win by forfeit.
White and Hollingsworth picked up pins for the storm against BGM and Cheyenne Simmons added a win by forfeit.
