SPORTS SHORTS: Trojans’ fast start too much for South Hamilton
JEWELL — Lucas Barnes and Cash Johnston combined for 31 points as the West Marshall boys’ basketball team buried South Hamilton under an early surge for a 46-29 win in Friday’s Heart of Iowa Conference contest.
The Trojans (4-3, 3-2) jumped out to a 19-3 lead after the opening quarter and kept the host Hawks at bay the rest of the way.
Barnes had 16 points and nine rebounds, while Johnston finished with 15 points and nine boards to lead West Marshall. DJ Ridout added seven points, while Noah DeSotel had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Grant Larson led South Hamilton (0-7, 0-5) with 11 points.
Spartans speed past East Marshall girls
LE GRAND — The Grundy Center girls’ basketball team held East Marshall scoreless for a 10-minute stretch during the first half of the Spartans’ eventual 64-18 win in Friday’s NICL West Division game.
The score was tied at 4-all before Grundy Center went on a run that spanned more than 10 minutes and saw the Spartans’ lead balloon to 29-4. East Marshall (2-7, 0-3) scored no more than five points in each quarter of its fifth consecutive loss.
Grundy Center (5-2, 3-0) was led by Ava Mundt with 18 points, and Caturella Brown added 12 more for the Spartans. Maddy Hendershot had nine points, Kali Aldrich got eight, and Raelyn Steinmeyer added six off the bench.
Ashtyn Wheater led East Marshall with eight points.
Spartan girls bowling conquer Chickasaws
GRUNDY CENTER — Abby Butler rolled a new season-high with a 162 high game for Grundy Center girls bowling in a win over New Hampton at Crystal Bowl on Thursday.
The Spartans won with 1,590 pins to 1,243 for the Chickasaws. Butler also had the high series with a 250. Quinn Beenken added a 225 series, Maura Allen rolled a 219, Maycee Stolzman a 207 and Kaisha DePoorter and Nevaeh Prugh finished with a 192 and 188, respectively.
The Grundy girls rolled up 497 pins in the Baker games for the first win of the season for the Spartans, improving to 1-2.
The Spartan boys fell to New Hampton, 3,352 pins to 2,813. New Hampton’s Landon Marr had the high series for the dual with a 511, including a 276 game.
Gabe McMartin had the high score for the Spartans (1-2) with a 426 series and Britt Meyer added a 402. Michael Lang rolled 355 pins, Andrew Aswegan 339, Jacob Hoy 338 and Elliott Vokes a 280.
Grundy Center’s boys fell to 1-2 overall. The Spartan squads are back in action against on Friday, Jan. 10 at the Super Bowl in Forest City against the Indians.
