Turnovers plague MHS girls against Mason City
MASON CITY — A one-sided series for the last 15 years remained that way as Mason City marched past the Marshalltown girls’ basketball team 52-23 in Thursday’s makeup game.
The Bobcats (4-3, 0-1) trailed every step of the way, falling behind 15-2 during the first quarter en route to the loss in the Iowa Alliance Conference North Division opener for both teams.
Machaela Trask and Brogan Evans led Mason City (3-2, 1-0) with 12 points apiece. The Riverhawks led 23-4 after the opening period before backing off its full-court press.
“Once again, our first quarter was the one that doomed us,” said MHS head coach Brian Murphy. “We had 14 turnovers in the first quarter, which allowed Mason City to score too frequently in transition. When we defended them in the half court, they struggled to score against our length. They were able to use steals and transition to score before our defense was set.”
The live-ball turnovers by Marshalltown helped Mason City’s offense, and the Riverhawks ran out to the early advantage. The Bobcats made 35 turnovers in suffering their 30th consecutive loss to Mason City.
Frankie Long led Marshalltown with 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots. Long scored the Bobcats’ first six points. Ellie Hughes added four points and five rebounds, while Jorja Janssen made the team’s lone 3-pointer. Millie Heitmann added two points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The Bobcats are back at home Friday night to face Fort Dodge in conference play.
