Crooks helps Cyclones down Jayhawks
AMES — The Iowa State women’s basketball team never trailed and remained unbeaten at home this season with a 78-64 victory over Kansas in Wednesday’s Big 12 Conference clash inside Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones (10-5, 1-1) got a game-high 33 points from Audi Crooks, who shot 13-of-18 from the field and 7-of-13 at the free-throw line. Crooks drew 12 fouls and helped Iowa State command a 42-24 advantage in points in the paint.
Iowa State led by as many as 21 points during the fourth quarter of a game that was only tied twice, 6-all and 38-all. Kansas (10-3, 0-2) fell behind by double digits midway through the second quarter, 30-20, but got back to within three points — 36-33 — by halftime.
The Jayhawks continued to fight back into the game and drew even at 38 with 8:22 left in the third. Iowa State outscored Kansas 18-10 the rest of the period, including 10 points for Crooks, and Emily Ryan’s layup to start the fourth quarter put the Cyclones back up by double figures. Kansas never got within 10 again.
Ryan finished with a season-high 19 points to go with six assists for the Cyclones, and Addy Brown added her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
S’Mya Nichols scored 22 points to lead the Jayhawks, and Elle Evans added 12 points.
Iowa State is back at home on Sunday with a 5:30 p.m. game against Utah.
