Fighting Illini too tough for Hawkeyes down the stretch
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Illinois earned its second ranked win of the season on Thursday night, knocking off the No. 23 Iowa women’s basketball team 62-57 in Big Ten Conference play.
Four players scored in double figures for the Fighting Illini (12-4, 2-3), who held off the Hawkeyes (12-4, 2-3) throughout the second half. Illinois led by as many as seven points in the third quarter but couldn’t put the game away until the waning moments.
Iowa closed to within three points, 60-57, with 1:38 remaining on a Hannah Stuelke layup, but Illinois made its last two free-throw attempts with 11 seconds left to seal the win.
Stuelke led Iowa with 18 points and 13 rebounds, and Lucy Olsen added 16 points for the Hawkeyes. The rest of the team combined to shoot 8-for-25 from the field, as Iowa committed 18 turnovers and shot 5-for-20 from 3-point range and 8-for-17 from the free-throw line.
Kendall Bostic led Illinois with 17 points and 14 boards.
