Gomez gets 100th win, Bobcats go 1-3 at Valley
WEST DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys’ wrestling team went 1-3 at the competition-rich West Des Moines Valley Duals on Saturday.
The Bobcats fell to Class 3A No. 10 Dallas Center-Grimes (42-31), host Valley (52-24) and No. 3 Indianola (50-22) before ending the day with a win over Muscatine (59-14).
Leading Marshalltown on the day was senior 165-pounder Xayvion Anderson, who improved to 18-0 this season with a 4-0 day on the mats. Anderson, rated seventh, opened with a win over another ranked wrestler, beating DCG’s 10th-ranked Tyde Nelsen by decision, 7-2. He added two pins and a technical fall the rest of the way.
Bobcat senior Johan Gomez reached 100 wins for his career amidst a 3-1 day at 190 pounds. Gomez, rated ninth, scored a technical fall, a major decision and gained a forfeit before falling in his final match by decision to Muscatine’s eighth-ranked Andy Franke, 6-5.
Dalton Zednichek (175) and Ignacio Macias (215) also went 3-1 for the Bobcats. Both wrestlers won three times by pinfall.
Nicholas Million (106), Lucas Bantz (132), Nicholas Wise (144) and Jaxson Hinkle (285) all went 2-2. Both of Wise’s losses were to ranked counterparts, and both of his wins were by fall.
