’Huskers catch Hawks in OT

Iowa loses 4 in a row for 1st time since 2016

IOWA CITY — The Iowa women’s basketball team blew an 11-point fourth-quarter lead and lost to Nebraska 87-84 in overtime on Thursday night inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena, suffering its fourth-straight loss.

It marks the Hawkeyes’ first four-game losing streak since 2016 and sends the team to 2-5 in Big Ten Conference play under first-year head coach Jan Jensen.

Nebraska freshman Britt Prince scored a game-high 22 points, including a tying jumper with 50 seconds remaining in regulation and back-to-back free throws with two seconds left to tie the score at 77-all.

A layup by Lucy Olsen put Iowa (12-6) in front 64-53 with 6:05 left in the fourth quarter, but the Hawkeyes couldn’t close out the Cornhuskers (14-4, 5-2). A pair of 3-pointers by Logan Nissley and another by Jessica Petrie helped Nebraska erase the double-digit deficit before Prince tied it up.

Nebraska made its final 10 field-goal attempts in regulation, while the Hawkeyes didn’t make a basket over the final 2:38 of the fourth quarter.

Iowa shot 5-for-12 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter and 16-of-29 for the game (55.2 percent) and fell at home for the third time this season. Nebraska went 18-of-22 at the line and made 13 3-pointers in the come-from-behind victory.

It’s Nebraska’s first win inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena since 2018, helping the Huskers improve to 14-4 overall and 5-2 in Big Ten play.

Alexis Markowski added 19 points and seven rebounds before fouling out, while Petrie and Nissley finished with 13 points apiece for Nebraska. Prince played a game-high 41:10 and tallied seven rebounds, six steals and five assists.

Six players scored in double figures for the Hawkeyes, led by Hannah Stuelke’s eighth career double-double of 16 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Olsen and freshman Aaliyah Guyton added 14 points apiece, Kylle Feuerbach finished with 13, and Sydney Affolter and Addison O’Grady added 10 points apiece.

Affolter also had 13 rebounds while Olson had seven assists as the Hawkeyes tried their third starting lineup in as many games.

The Hawkeyes head to the Pacific Northwest for games at Oregon on Sunday and Washington on Wednesday.
