SPORTS SHORTS: Anderson’s crown leads Bobcats at Bettendorf
BETTENDORF — Marshalltown senior Xayvion Anderson finished atop his bracket to lead the Bobcat boys’ wrestling team to eighth place at the Freeman/Castro Midwest Shootout held Friday and Saturday at Bettendorf High School.
Marshalltown had seven top-six finishes in the 15-team tournament, led by Anderson’s championship at 165 pounds. Anderson (27-3) went 5-0 over the two-day event, scoring three wins by pinfall to reach the semifinals. There he secured a 14-2 major decision over Colt West from Hallsville, Mo., before beating Johnston’s Caden Leonard in the finals, 2-1.
Dalton Zednichek (175) improved to 20-10 with a 4-1 weekend on his way to third place. After falling in the semifinals, Zednichek posted two pins on the back of the bracket to claim the bronze.
Nick Wise (138) moved to 24-6 for the year with a fourth-place finish, going 3-2 on the mat. Cooper McLeod (144) also scored fourth with a 3-3 day.
Sixth-place finishes went to Nicholas Million (106), Kager Kremer (150) and JJ Schoenfelder (215).
STC girls score third place at East Buchanan
WINTHROP — The South Tama girls’ wrestling team took third place at The Marilyn Invitational hosted Saturday by East Buchanan High School, scoring 149.5 points behind three individual champions.
Jayva Gomez, Ava Hendricks and Autumn Elsbury all won their respective weight classes, while Livia Smith, Keylee Holloway and Abigail Chyma each earned second place.
Gomez (105 pounds) went 5-0 with two pins, while Hendricks (115) was 4-0 with two pins and Elsburym (170) was 4-0 with three pins.
Smith (100) went 3-1 with two pins, and Chyma (155) was 3-1 with three pins. Holloway was 4-1 with all five matches decided by pinfall.
STC also got fourth-place finishes from Taylor Johannsen (110), Ava Perkins (135) and Ioleta Kingbird (190).
West Marshall matmen fourth at Perry Invite
PERRY — The West Marshall boys’ wrestling team took fourth place out of 15 teams at the Perry Invitational on Saturday, scoring 166 points behind a pair of champions.
Jon Gonzalez at 120 pounds and Shane Hanford at 150 scored first-place finishes to lead the Trojans, who came in two points in front of Dowling Catholic (164) for fourth. West Delaware (225.5) won ahead of Sergeant Bluff-Luton (189) and Carlisle (176).
Gonzalez (22-2) got his title with a 3-0 day on the mat, including a 12-3 major decision over Greene County’s Gavyn Winters to claim first place. Hanford (24-0) also went 3-0 with a pair of pins and an 11-5 decision over Carlisle’s Mason Lucas in the finals.
Kinnick Geers (20-7) came in second at 138, winning twice by major decision before a loss to Ryan Rider of Carlisle in the finals, and Jack Decker scored silver at 126 with a 3-1 day that ended with a finals loss to Kyler Simons of Dowling Catholic.
The Trojans also got third-place finishes from James Decker (113) and Ben Gonzalez (165).
Mustangs, Storm compete at Hudson tourney
HUDSON — The East Marshall/GMG boys’ wrestling team took eighth place and South Hardin-BCLUW was ninth in the 11-team Hudson Invitational on Saturday.
Jordan Meling and Drew Wheater of EM/GMG led the local matmen with third-place finishes. Meling (16-10) claimed bronze at 132 pounds with a 3-1 day, winning twice by fall, while Wheater (22-4) also went 3-1 with one pin. Both lost semifinal matches before bouncing back to claim their consolation final.
Xavier Slifer placed fifth at 126 for the Mustangs, moving to 19-7 for the year with a 2-2 day. Both of his wins were pins.
South Hardin-BCLUW was led by a fourth-place finish from Garrett Bruner (15-8), who went 2-2 in the 120-pound bracket. Regan Eide (106), Zaden Eggers (157) and Ryan Busch (165) all placed fifth for the storm.
MHS girls wrestling ninth at 15-team Bob Sharp Invite
ANKENY — The Marshalltown girls’ wrestling team finished ninth out of 15 teams at the Bob Sharp Invite on Friday at Ankeny High School.
The Bobcats scored 86 points behind a third-place finish for Genevieve Lantigua, who went 3-1 on the day with three pins at 155 pounds.
Nintee Tarr took fourth at 140 with a 3-2 day of wrestling, winning all three times by fall, while Neveah Gonzalez was fourth at 235.
Olivia Wise scored fifth at 190, and Ava Kusserow came in sixth at 130.
Comets keep spotless division record intact
CONRAD — The BCLUW girls’ basketball team held Collins-Maxwell (1-12, 1-6) to single-digit in all four quarters of Friday’s 65-27 Comet victory in Iowa Star Conference play.
The Comets (8-4, 7-0) got out to a 21-9 lead in the opening quarter and cruised from there, remaining unbeaten in South Division action.
Four players scored in double figures for BCLUW, led by Savannah Moeller’s 17 points. Grace Farnsworth had 16 points and 17 rebounds, and Klayre Gallentine added 16 points, six steals and four assists. Morgan Bergman chipped in 11 points and nine boards off the bench.
Trojans take down Bluejays in HOIAC rematch
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team broke open a close game in the third quarter of Friday’s 68-56 Heart of Iowa Conference win over visiting Perry. West Marshall (8-5, 6-4) led at halftime, 38-33, before outscoring the Bluejays 22-13 in the third period to pull away.
DJ Ridout led the Trojans with 18 points, while Lucas Barnes finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. AJ Dee chipped in 12 points, Cash Johnston had nine and Noah DeSotel added eight. Caden Pfantz passed out seven assists in the Heart of Iowa Conference win.
Geren Kenney had 21 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals to lead Perry (8-5, 6-4).
