SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat girls wrestling 5th at Alliance Invite
DES MOINES — Marshalltown girls wrestling finished fifth out of six teams at Tuesday’s Iowa Alliance Conference Invitational at Hoover High School.
The Bobcats scored 90 team points. Mason City won the team title with 197 points, followed by Ottumwa (178) and Ames (169).
Olivia Wise was the top finisher for the Bobcats, grabbing a second-place finish at 190 pounds. She pinned Ames’ Tatum Tharp in the semifinals but lost by fall in the final against Ottumwa’s Sophia Mendibles.
MHS also had three bronze-medal winners — Natalie Nickey at 100 pounds, Ava Kusserow at 130, Genevieve Lantigua at 155 and Nevaeh Gonzalez at heavyweight. Kusserow and Gonzalez both battled their way to two consolation victories for their spot on the podium — Lantigua was 1-1. Geneva Spitzli was 1-2 to finish fourth at 145 pounds.
West Marshall girls handle Thunder
STATE CENTER — Bella Borgos scored 21 points as West Marshall girls basketball controlled Grand View Christian in a 55-38 win at West Marshall High School on Tuesday.
Borgos added six steals. Halle Jones contributed 15 points and Lily Zahnd finished with nine points, 12 rebounds and five steals.
The Trojans grabbed 16 offensive rebounds and 15 steals as a team and led GVC 30-16 at halftime.
West Marshall, ranked 11th in Class 3A, improved to 12-3 overall and 9-2 in the Heart of Iowa conference. The Trojans head to Saydel on Friday.
Spartan bowling splits with Sumner-Fred
SUMNER — Grundy Center boys bowling built a big lead in the individual games for a win over Sumner-Fredericksburg as the Spartan girls and boys split with the Cougars at Thunder Lanes on Tuesday.
The boys won, 2,480 pins to 2,234. Sumner’s girls won, 2,119 pins to 1,748.
Gabe McMartin had the high series at 405 pins for the Spartan boys, which also included a high game of 211. Michael Lang added a 351 series, Jacob Hoy 342, Britt Meyer 338 and Alex Kiewiet 261.
Lilyanne Palmer led the Spartan girls with a 268 series on games of 144 and 124 pins. Abigail Butler contributed a 245 series; Maura Allen had the high game for the Grundy girls with a 158 and finished with a 240 series, as did Maycee Stolzman. Nevaeh Prugh chipped in a 194 series as the final counting score from the individual round.
Unbeaten Grundy Center guaranteed a share
GRUNDY CENTER — The Class 2A No. 6 Grundy Center boys’ basketball team guaranteed itself a at least a share of the NICL West Division title with a 59-46 triumph over South Hardin on Tuesday night.
The Spartans (13-0, 6-0) handed the visiting Tigers (5-9, 2-5) their fourth-straight loss, leading by as many as 25 points in the fourth quarter.
Tiernan Vokes scored a team-leading 16 points for Grundy Center. Brody Zinkula added 12 points while Judd Jirovsky and Brayden Davie added nine points apiece. Jirovsky led the squad with nine assists, seven rebounds and three steals, while Vokes added six boards.
Jake Balvanz and Owen Larson scored 16 points apiece to lead South Hardin.
No. 3 Grand View Christian sinks Trojan boys
STATE CENTER — The Class 2A No. 3 Grand View Christian boys’ basketball team buried West Marshall under a barrage of 3-pointers, sinking 16 shots from beyond the arc in an 83-46 win over the Trojans in Tuesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.
Jameson Scharnberg led the Thunder (14-0, 11-0) with 26 points, making three 3-pointers, and Emiliano Barrantes added 25 points, including six triples, to go with 12 rebounds and five blocked shots.
AJ Dee scored a team-leading 13 points off the bench for West Marshall (8-6, 6-5). Cash Johnston and DJ Ridout added six points apiece, while Caden Pfantz pitched in with four points and seven rebounds.
