SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat swimmers score two wins at Mason City
MASON CITY — The Marshalltown boys’ swimming squad won nine of 11 events on its way to a sweep of Tuesday’s double dual against Bishop Garrigan and host Mason City.
The Bobcats outscored the host Riverhawks 102-66 and Garrigan 116-41 to start their three-meet week.
Lincoln Barker and Charles Gilbertson both were a part of four event wins for MHS, both winning twice individually. Kade Randall was a part of three winning races, including two relays.
The Bobcats opened by winning the 200-yard medley relay, as Aaron Hunter, Parker Christen, Gilbertson and Michael Lechnir out-touched the other Marshalltown quartet to win in 1 minute, 56.07 seconds. The runner-up squad of Jacob Seberger, Sam Greazel, Isaac Seberger and Zander Stupp clocked in at 1:56.69.
Barker followed with his first of two individual wins, taking the top spot in the 200 freestyle (1:54.66) before later winning the 500 free in 5:11.57.
Randall (2:14.80) barely beat Greazel (2:15.01) to the wall in the 200 individual medley, and Gilbertson had more than a four-second cushion in his win in the 100 butterfly.
The Bobcats’ 200 free relay team of Lechnir, Jacob Seberger, Randall and Barker won by more than five seconds (1:37.36), while Gilbertson (1:03.08) led Hunter (1:10.02) to the finish in the 100 backstroke. Greazel (1:07.52) finished ahead of Jacob Seberger (1:08.63) in the 100 breaststroke, and Marshalltown closed the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 free relay (Barker, Randall, Gilbertson, Greazel; 3:32.41).
MHS girls wrestlers split at Johnston
JOHNSTON — Marshalltown girls wrestling picked up a dual win over Urbandale as part of a triangular with the J-Hawks and Colfax-Mingo at Johnston High School on Thursday. The Bobcats defeated Urbandale, 42-35, and lost to Colfax-Mingo, 63-18.
Marshalltown’s Natalie Nickey had a head-to-head win against Urbandale at 100 pounds by pinfall in the second period and Allanna Robinson pinned her opponent at 110 pounds. Addyson Lovelace, Olivia Wise, Nevaeh Gonzalez, Stephanie Avalos Gomez and Adele Beek won by forfeit.
All of Marshalltown’s points against Colfax-Mingo were via forfeit, with Maelee Corona (105 pounds), Avalos Gomez (115) and Patricia Mateo Merita (125) having their arms raised.
Marshalltown will compete in the Allie Morrison Duals on Saturday in the Roundhouse, with Waterloo Columbus, West Fork, Knoxville, BGM and South Hardin-BCLUW all slated to attend. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m.
Spartan comeback spurned by Jesup girls
JESUP — The Grundy Center girls’ basketball team rallied to force overtime but couldn’t overtake Jesup in a 53-47 overtime loss on Thursday night.
Kali Aldrich helped the Spartans (6-4) erase a six-point deficit over the final minute by swishing a long 3-pointer at the final horn to tie the score at 43-all. Jesup (7-3) got the upper hand in overtime and held on for the win.
Karlee Lynch scored a game-high 20 points to lead Grundy Center in defeat. Aldrich finished with 10 points, Raelyn Steinmeyer added eight and Maddy Hendershot seven for the Spartans.
Bobcat bowlers split with host Mason City
CHARLES CITY — The Marshalltown boys’ bowling team scored a narrow win over Mason City on Tuesday, edging the host Riverhawks 3,037-2,926 at Comet Bowl.
Carter McCready led Marshalltown with a 440 series, but was followed closely by Aiden Cowan (433) and Gage Grieves (428). Jayden Beichley was close behind at 405, while Porter Niedermann rounded out the individual scoring (373).
McCready’s 236 was the high game for MHS during the dual.
The Bobcat girls fell to Mason City 2,437-2,262. Devin Peterson posted a high game of 262 on her way to a team-leading 394 series, while Camillya Thomas rolled a 204 on her way to a 342 series.
Sydney May (316), Kenedy Lammert (263) and Ariana Villagomez (241) also scored for the Bobcats.
Trojan girls clobber winless Greene County
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall girls’ basketball team held Greene County scoreless in the second half of a 71-7 rout of the Rams on Tuesday night.
West Marshall (9-1, 6-1) led 32-3 after the opening period and 50-7 at the half. The Trojans outscored Greene County 21-0 in the second half.
Bella Borgos filled the stat sheet with 24 points, 10 steals and eight assists for West Marshall, making four 3-pointers on the night. Lily Zahnd added 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists, five steals and two blocked shots. Natalie Nichols chipped in with seven points.
Makenna Ebersole scored five points to lead Greene County (0-9, 0-6).
Rebel girls push past Pirates
REINBECK — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls’ basketball team continually pulled away from previously ranked Hudson, hammering the Pirates 61-40 on Tuesday night.
Kennedy Brant had team-highs of 19 points, nine rebounds and six assists to lead the Rebels (7-2). Brinn Schneider had 14 points and Elly Sieh added 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists for G-R.
Taylor Davis had a game-high 20 points to pace Hudson (5-3).
Kuper, Cougars too much for North Tama girls
ACKLEY — Josie Kuper piled up 23 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots to lead AGWSR past the North Tama girls’ basketball team, 53-21, on Tuesday night.
Trevyn Smith added eight points, eight rebounds, eight steals and six assists for the Cougars (8-2).
Kruiz Ewoldt had nine points and nine rebounds to lead North Tama (4-6) in the non-conference loss. Ava Breakenridge added eight points and six boards.
Clarksville catches Comets in conference play
CONRAD — The BCLUW girls’ basketball team was unable to finish off Clarksville and the Indians rallied for a 58-52 overtime victory over the Comets in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference match.
BCLUW led 43-25 entering the fourth quarter before being outscored by Clarksville 23-5.
Savannah Moeller led the Comets (6-3) with 19 points to go with nine rebounds and four steals. Grace Farnsworth finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds, and Brinna Benson chipped in nine points, six boards and five assists in the loss.
Wolverines fall to Waterloo Christian
WATERLOO — The GMG girls’ basketball team was unable to overcome 34 turnovers in a 54-33 loss at Waterloo Christian on Tuesday.
Natalie Witt scored a game-high 16 points to lead the host Regents (2-6).
Skyler Murty led GMG (4-7) with 12 points and eight rebounds. Makayla Pendleton had six points, Brooklyn Jones added five points, while Rhianna Murty and Madison Bryant scored four points apiece.
Mustangs can’t keep up with Union
LE GRAND — The East Marshall girls’ basketball team surrendered Union Community’s first win of the season, falling to the Knights 51-34 on Tuesday night.
Lily Lorenzen scored a game-high 22 points to go with six rebounds and five steals to lead Union (1-10).
Sydney Hull and Mya Gould scored nine points apiece to lead East Marshall (2-9). Hull also had a team-leading 10 rebounds. Ashtyn Wheater contributed six points and five boards.
