SPORTS SHORTS: Comets beat GMG to maintain league lead

CONRAD — The BCLUW girls’ basketball team remained unbeaten atop the Iowa Star Conference’s South Division by beating GMG 64-27 on Tuesday night.

The Comets (7-4, 6-0) scrambled out to a 13-1 lead after the opening quarter, withstood GMG’s counterpunch in the second period and dominated after halftime. BCLUW’s 18-13 lead at the break ballooned after 46-14 second-half scoring advantage.

Four players scored in double figures for BCLUW, led by Brinna Benson’s 15 points courtesy of five 3-pointers. Klayre Gallentine had 13 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and three steals, and Grace Farnsworth finished with 11 points and nine boards.

Morgan Bergman chipped in 10 points off the bench and Savannah Moeller had a team-high 12 rebounds.

Rhianna Murty had 11 points and seven rebounds to pace GMG (4-9, 2-4). Skyler Murty added six points and seven boards, while Makayla Pendleton chipped in four points and five rebounds.

STC girls basketball falls to Benton, 39-24

TAMA — South Tama girls basketball suffered its third-straight loss, a 39-24 setback at the hands of Benton Community on Tuesday night.

The Trojans trailed 18-7 at the half and couldn’t make up the difference after the intermission.

Dyan Keahna scored eight points but on 3-of-16 shooting to lead STC (2-10, 0-8). Aubrey Dolezal scored five points off the bench, while Rylee Ridout added four points and a team-leading 11 rebounds. Scout Ridout chipped in with four points, but the Trojans couldn’t overcome 19-percent shooting from the field (8-for-42).

Aubrey Kelly had 13 points, nine rebounds and four steals to lead Benton (3-8, 2-6).

Trojans can’t claim victory, fall to Bobcats

TAMA — The South Tama boys’ basketball team remained winless with Tuesday’s 74-39 loss to Benton Community in a WaMaC Conference West Division game.

The Trojans (0-11, 0-8) were held to just three points in the second quarter and trailed 33-15 at halftime. STC won the third quarter, 18-17, but the deficit was too great.

Eli Patterson poured in 38 points to lead Benton (4-7, 3-5), going 13-of-18 from the field with four 3-pointers. He also was 8-for-14 from the free-throw line and chipped in three steals.

Cyrell Etzen came in off the bench to lead South Tama with 20 points and nine rebounds before fouling out. Tanner Large and Marion Harris added six points apiece.
