SPORTS SHORTS: Cyclones finish off Arizona State, 90-83

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Iowa State women’s basketball team scored 34 points in the first quarter, led by as many as 20 in the third but still had to hold off Arizona State down the stretch for a 90-83 victory in Wednesday’s Big 12 Conference clash.

The Cyclones (11-6, 2-2) led 55-35 just over two minutes into the third period and maintained a 10-point advantage, 86-76, with 45 seconds left in the game. Arizona State (8-8, 2-2) scored the next seven points, however, to trim the deficit to 86-83, but the Sun Devils could get no closer.

Free throws by Arianna Jackson and Reagan Wilson put the finishing touches on the Cyclones’ first true road win of the season.

Audi Crooks had 20 points to lead Iowa State, Jackson and Emily Ryan had 16 apiece and Addy Brown added 14 more. Wilson chipped in 10 points off the bench and the Cyclones overcame a 26-for-38 performance (68 percent) from the free-throw line.

Banks scores 19 as Drake downs Bradley 64-57

PEORIA, Ill. — Tavion Banks scored 19 points off the bench to lead Drake past Bradley 64-57 on Wednesday night.

Banks added seven rebounds for the Bulldogs (13-2, 3-2 Missouri Valley Conference). Mitch Mascari scored 12 points while shooting 4 for 10 from beyond the arc and added five steals. Kael Combs shot 4 of 4 from the field and 2 of 3 from the free-throw line to finish with 10 points.

The Braves (13-3, 4-1) were led by Zek Montgomery, who recorded 17 points and six rebounds. Darius Hannah added 14 points and two blocks for Bradley. The loss ended a five-game winning streak for the Braves.

Murray State knocks off Northern Iowa 71-68

CEDAR FALLS — Terence Harcum led Murray State with 14 points, including a layup with 12 seconds left as the Racers took down Northern Iowa 71-68 on Wednesday night at the McLeod Center.

Harcum shot 5 for 8, including 2 for 4 from beyond the arc for the Racers (9-7, 3-2 Missouri Valley Conference). Jacobi Wood added 11 points , six assists and three steals, while Alden Applewhite had 11 points.

The Panthers (9-7, 3-2) were led by Trey Campbell, who posted 17 points and three steals. Northern Iowa also got 15 points, four assists and two steals from Tytan Anderson. Leon Bond III also put up 13 points.
