SPORTS SHORTS: Spartans slam Sailors for cross-NICL win
GRUNDY CENTER — Four players scored in double-digits for Grundy Center as the Spartan boys’ basketball team trampled Waterloo Columbus 79-42 on Friday night.
Tiernan Vokes led the Class 2A No. 6 Spartans with 17 points and Brayden Davie added 15 off the bench, including three 3-pointers. Ryker Thoren added 12 points and Brody Zinkula scored 11 more as Grundy Center improved to 14-0.
Thomas Fereday scored 14 points to lead Waterloo Columbus (5-9).
Grundy Center hosts East Marshall on Tuesday in NICL West Division play.
Grundy Center girls wallop Waterloo Columbus
GRUNDY CENTER — Three players scored in double figures as the Grundy Center girls’ basketball team dispatched Waterloo Columbus 66-21 here Friday night in cross-NICL action.
Ava Mundt led all scorers with 15 points for the Spartans (10-6). Karlee Lynch chipped in with 13 points and Trinity Jirovsky scored a career-high 12 points.
Raelyn Steinmeyer sank three 3-pointers for nine points as well as Grundy Center dominated from mindway through the first quarter on. The Spartans broke a 3-all tie by outscoring the Sailors 18-1 the rest of the period.
Macey O’Brien led Waterloo Columbus (2-13) with six points.
The Spartans go on the road to face East Marshall in NICL West Division play Tuesday.
Trojans can’t catch Saydel at the end
DES MOINES — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team lost a back-and-forth battle with Saydel on Friday night, falling 70-66 in a Heart of Iowa Conference clash.
Gage Moreno scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Eagles (7-8, 5-7) to the season split with West Marshall (8-7, 6-6). It marked just the fourth time the Trojans have given up 70 points or more this season, with two of those coming from Class 2A No. 3 Grand View Christian.
Cash Johnston and AJ Dee had 14 points apiece to lead the Trojans, Noah DeSotel scored 12 points, and DJ Ridout added nine points in the loss. Lucas Barnes had eight points and seven rebounds, and Johnston pulled down six boards.
West Marshall is off until Thursday’s non-conference home game against Baxter.
Mustangs make 19 3-pointers to beat AGWSR
LE GRAND — The East Marshall boys’ basketball team overcame an early deficit and eventually breezed to an NICL West Division win over AGWSR, 84-53, on Thursday night.
The Mustangs (6-8, 3-3) trailed 18-15 after the first quarter but outscored the visiting Cougars 27-1 in the second period to put the game away.
Blake Neuroth made six 3-pointers on his way to a career-high 23 points to lead East Marshall, while Leland Hamilton-Youngbird also made six treys en route to 20 points. Cody Weaver contributed 13 points and three more of the Mustangs’ 19 3-pointers.
Stewart’s career high lifts MCC women in Wisconsin
MADISON, Wis. — Shenell Stewart scored a career-high 25 points in leading the Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team to a 63-53 victory over Madison College on Thursday night.
Stewart shot 12-for-17 from the field and also contributed nine rebounds, three assists and three steals to lead the Tigers (12-8) out of their five-game losing streak.
Mia Sao-Martinez added 14 points and seven rebounds, Destiny Sao-Martinez had 11 points, and Kenijae Cherry added eight points and 13 boards.
MCC trailed 31-30 at the half before outscoring the host Wolfpack 33-22 after halftime despite playing only six players.
Dani Latz led Madison (6-10) with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
MCC hosts top-ranked Kirkwood on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
EM/GMG splits, North Tama 0-2 in triangular
JESUP — The East Marshall/GMG wrestling team split a pair of matches on Thursday night, defeating North Tama before falling to Class 1A No. 4 Jesup.
The Mustangs defeated North Tama 54-30, benefitting from seven forfeits by the Redhawks. North Tama won three of the five contested matches, however, getting pins from Maxon Monat (113 pounds), Roman Bradley (138) and Kolt Knaack (150).
Xavier Slifer (126) and Jordan Meling (132) both picked up first-period pins for East Marshall/GMG.
North Tama fell to Jesup 75-6, while EM/GMG lost to the J-Hawks 74-6. Knaack, ranked third by IAwrestle, pinned Tyce Larson for the Redhawks’ lone win, while Drew Wheater (190) pinned Andrew Devlin for the Mustangs’ only win against Jesup.
STC boys beat back Grinnell in wrestling dual
TAMA — The South Tama boys’ wrestling team tackled Grinnell for a 48-35 win in Thursday’s WaMaC Conference dual.
The Trojans got five wins by pin and picked up three forfeits along the way to the team victory. Scoring pins for STC were Manuel Cervantes (215 pounds), Lakyr Peska (285), Eli Cruikshank (132), Clayton Babinat (144) and Kinzer Jaennette (165).
West Marshall girls cruise to 4-0 showing
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall girls’ wrestling team went 3-0 in a home quadrangular meet on Thursday night, defeating Colfax-Mingo (53-24), South Hardin-BCLUW (54-18) and Pleasantville (66-0).
Five Trojan wrestlers had two pins on the night: Madelyn Thompson (130 pounds), Kylee Schuler (140), Lillian Fischer (145), Elyse Ranson (155) and Reese Buschbom (170). Ranson’s lone loss was by fall to SH-BCLUW’s third-ranked Taya Hollingsworth.
Ceanna White (125) scored the Storm’s only other match win against West Marshall, pinning Jalyn Ridout in 2:22.
SH-BCLUW fell to Colfax-Mingo, 48-29, but beat Pleasantville 42-6. Hollingsworth, Cheyenne Simmons (170) and Leila Wedgwood (135) all won by fall against the Tigerhawks, while Hollingsworth and White were pinfall winners against Pleasantville.
