SPORTS SHORTS: Steinmeyer’s sharpshooting propels Spartans
OELWEIN — Raelyn Steinmeyer scored a career-high 20 points and the Grundy Center girls’ basketball team turned back Oelwein 56-47 on Tuesday night.
The Spartans (6-3) led by as many as 14 points in the second quarter but saw their lead erased as Oelwein rallied back to a 41-all tie early in the fourth. Grundy Center pulled away from there behind Steinmeyer and Karlee Lynch who ended with 16 points.
Steinmeyer made five 3-pointers in the win. Caturella Brown chipped in eight points, Kali Aldrich had seven and Maddy Hendershot five as the Spartans overcame the absence of leading scorer Ava Mundt.
McKinzie See scored a team-leading 20 points for Oelwein (2-10), and Haydin Becker added 15 for the Huskies.
Dynamic duo drives GMG past Belle Plaine
GARWIN — Colin Teske and Rider Kupka combined to score 41 points as the GMG boys’ basketball team downed Belle Plaine 57-51 on Monday night.
Teske made five 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 21 points, and Kupka cashed in a pair of treys on his way to 20 points. Kupka also led the Wolverines (3-6) with six assists and three steals. Grady Dieleman added seven points.
Sam DeMeulenaere paced Belle Plaine (2-8) with 19 points.
