DES MOINES — The Marshalltown High School bowling teams competed in their Iowa Alliance Conference Tournaments this week at Bowlerama Lanes, with the Bobcat girls placing fourth and the boys scoring fifth.
The Marshalltown girls rolled their second-highest total of the season as their 2,394 total took fourth in the 10-team meet, trailing only Des Moines Lincoln (2,896), Ottumwa (2,659) and Mason City (2,485).
The Bobcats were within 60 pins of Mason City after two individual rounds going into the Baker games, but the Riverhawks had a 209 game during Bakers to help them pull away from Marshalltown. That 209 was the third-best Baker game of the tournament.
Bobcat senior bowler Devin Peterson placed seventh in the individual ranks and earned second-team all-conference as a result. Peterson had a season-best series with her first two games of 193-235–428, and she tacked on a 169 for a 597 total. The top six finishers each finished at 603 or better, led by Lincoln’s medalist Vicki Andrews (199-269-246–714).
Fellow senior Delaney Legg continued her strong play of late with the second-best Bobcat score of the day, rolling 138-188–326. She closed with a 143 game.
Also counting toward Marshalltown’s individual total were Ariana Villagomez (148-140–288), Sydney May (128-159–287) and Kenedy Lammert (138-146–284). Camillya Thomas rolled 118-146–264 before a 172 game.
The Bobcat boys had three all-conference performers, led by defending individual state champion Aiden Cowan. The junior rolled 169-237-245–651 for fifth place overall, just seven pins back of fourth place. Geoffrey Williams of Ames was the meet medalist with a 236-277-225–738 series.
Fellow Marshalltown juniors Jayden Beichley and Porter Niedermann earned second-team all-conference honors by placing ninth and 12th, respectively. Beichley rolled 237-213-178–628, while Niedermann had a season-best 418 series to start his 213-205-203–621.
Beichley’s 450 led MHS in the team competition, followed by Niedermann’s 418 and Cowan’s 406. Gage Grieves finished with a 188-198–386, and Cayden Slifer scored a 154-178–332. Carter McCready’s 141-165–306 would have improved 30 pins after his third game of 171.
Marshalltown’s 2,893 was just eight pins back of fourth-placed Des Moines North (2,901) in the final team standings. Ames was the conference champion with a 3,180, followed by Des Moines Lincoln (2,993) and Waterloo East (2,929).
The Bobcats were in fourth place after individual action, but North notched a pair of 200-point Baker games to climb in the final standings.
Marshalltown’s state-qualifying meets are both at home next week. The Bobcat girls host on Monday and the boys on Tuesday, with 9 a.m. starts at Wayward Social both days.
