MHS girls maul Polar Bears 55-10

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown girls’ basketball team was as healthy as it’s been all season, fielding a full lineup for Saturday’s 55-10 beatdown of Des Moines North.

Sydney Kapayou returned to the Bobcat lineup and contributed seven points off the bench in a game in which nine different players scored for MHS (7-13). Frankie Long scored a game-high 11 points as the Bobcats snapped a three-game slide while eclipsing six wins for the first time since 2009.

“The most telling stats from this game were that out of 22 made field goals we had 13 assists and only eight turnovers,” said MHS head coach Brian Murphy. “We challenged the team to take ownership of their own turnovers, and they responded in the way that we hoped they would.

“When facing a team that is in a tough spot like North, we wanted to get something positive out of the game and I thought we did exactly that.”

Millie Heitmann finished with nine points, four steals, three assists and three rebounds, helping the Bobcats jump out to a 12-0 lead. Amairra Johnson and Kinsley Bowie added seven points apiece, while Ellie Hughes had four points and five steals.

Marshalltown also got contributions on the scoreboard from junior varsity players Mallory Meyeraan and Mia Aguinaga, who scored three and two points, respectively.

“We dressed as many of our JV team as we could and played them for most of the fourth quarter,” Murphy said. “Angi Morelos Hernandez, Maya Heredia De Luna and Lisbeth Custodio all played their first varsity minutes, while Mia Aguinaga scored her first varsity points less than a minute after checking into the game.”

Marshalltown rounds out a four-game road swing with Tuesday’s trip to Des Moines Lincoln, and the Bobcats close the regular season at home against Des Moines East on Friday.
