Pins don’t fall for MHS
Bobcat girls unable to advance through state-qualifying meet

Monday’s state-qualifying meet was a tough ending for a Marshalltown girls bowling team led by a dedicated group of seniors.
The Bobcats missed the qualifying marks in the team and individual competitions at a tough Class 3A qualifier at Wayward Social in Marshalltown to bring the bowling season to an end.
Marshalltown placed fifth out of eight teams in the Baker competition to start Monday’s action, rolling up a total of 2,411 pins. Cedar Rapids Kennedy (2,634) and Mason City (2,534) moved on to state as the top-two placers.
MHS was in the hunt after the first five bakers, but hit a rough patch in their second set of five that included two games in the 120s before rallying for four of five games over 170 pins in their final set of five.
“We had a little bit of a different lineup this week, so the girls were just trying to get used to it,” MHS head coach Dustin Peterson said. “We started off OK, our second set was a little underwhelming, and the third set was great, our second-highest bakers for a five-game set this year, so that was awesome to see, but just too little, too late.”

In the individual competition, Devin Peterson was the closest Bobcat to qualifying for state, tying for 20th overall with a 501 series, which included a high game of 172.
Delaney Legg had a 476 series with a team-high 179 game in her final game; Ariana Villagomez also went out with a high game at 178 with a 459 series. Kenedy Lammert rolled 451 pins, Sydney May 450 and Aubrey Webber contributed a 361 total.
The top 8 cutoff for individual qualifiers was 557 — Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Kylie Cook was the regional champion with a 646 series, including a high game of 243.
“I know Devin’s not happy, but she did bowl right at or a little above her average,” Dustin Peterson said. “She was going to have to bowl in the 180s or 190s to really qualify here. If you ask me, this region and Iowa City had the best competition for substate. … Any team could’ve won the team title here and having 18 of the top 50 girls in the state at this one state qualifier is pretty rough on 10 girls that didn’t qualify for state today.”
It’s the end of the road for four Bobcat seniors, including Legg, who Dustin Peterson praised as a first-year bowler.

“Delaney Legg, what a great performance today,” Dustin added. “To go from being not a bowler to JV bowler and now one of our strongest bowlers, I’m just super proud of her.”
But for co-captains and four-year bowlers Lammert, May and Peterson, it’s a difficult pill to swallow.
“It’s really tough,” said Dustin Peterson after a long pause, collecting himself and his thoughts. “All of them four year bowlers, all leaving, that’s pretty tough.
“The coolest thing about the three of them is they’re all different. Kenedy is loud, not afraid to put herself out there, and she’ll do what she has to to get the team up. … Devin leads by example, she’s quiet, but she just keeps performing. … And I think Sydney for these last two seasons has been our vocal captain, does all the speeches at the beginning, all the little pep talks. I couldn’t ask for three better captains, each one of them complimentary to the others.”
