SPORTS SHORTS: Rebels run all over BGM in regional quarterfinal
REINBECK — Kennedy Brant scored a game-high 24 points as the Class 1A No. 8 Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls’ basketball team buried BGM 61-24 in Tuesday’s regional quarterfinals.
Brant scored 13 of her 20 points in the first half, helping the Rebels (19-3) run out to a 12-0 lead to start the game. Elly Sieh scored 13 points and Brinn Schneider made a pair of 3-pointers on her way to 10 points for G-R.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck limited the Bears (8-15) to just five points in the opening quarter and two more in the second period, leading to a 33-7 halftime margin.
Karagyn Minnaert led BGM with 10 points.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck advances to host Baxter (13-9) in Friday’s Region 8 semifinal at 7 p.m. The Bolts knocked off BCLUW, 46-39, in Tuesday’s quarterfinal game in Conrad.
Wolverines fall to Royals in overtime
COLO — The GMG boys’ basketball team forced overtime but couldn’t finish off Colo-NESCO in a 60-58 loss to the host Royals in Monday’s Class 1A District 10 quarterfinal.
The Wolverines (9-14) led for much of the first half but fell behind, 40-38, going into the fourth quarter. GMG rallied to tie and led early in overtime, but Colo-NESCO (16-7) came back to win with a buzzer-beating layup.
Colin Teske recorded 17 points, five assists and three steals to lead GMG in defeat. Jonas Buchanan had 16 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocked shots, and Ethan Klemesrud added 11 points.
MCC men outlast John Wood in overtime
QUINCY, Ill. — The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team won its third game in a row, outlasting John Wood CC in overtime, 88-85, on Monday night.
It marked the Tigers’ second win over the Blazers this season. MCC defeated John Wood on Nov. 16 in Marshalltown as part of the Emerson Classic.
Tre’von Coney scored a game-high 27 points to lead MCC in Monday’s win. He was 8-of-13 from the floor, 3-of-6 from 3-point range, and 8-of-9 at the free-throw line to help the Tigers tally the comeback win.
Marshalltown (13-15) trailed by nine at halftime, 48-39, before outscoring John Wood 36-27 in the second half to force overtime.
Justice Small had a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds, Ahmed Ibrahim had 17 points and seven boards, and Jayden Hill contributed 10 points off the bench for MCC.
Connor Watson led five double-digit scorers for John Wood (11-16) with 18 points. The Blazers made 18 3-pointers as a team in the loss.
MCC hosts Sauk Valley CC on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Student Activity Center.
