SPORTS SHORTS: Spartans sink Wolverines late

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center girls’ basketball team rallied from a four-point deficit for a 36-35 victory over Dike-New Hartford in Friday’s cross-NICL contest.

The Spartans (13-7) trailed early as Dike-New Hartford (7-13) scored the game’s first 11 points. Grundy Center rallied back to take a 17-14 halftime lead, and the two teams went into the fourth quarter in a 27-all deadlock.

The Wolverines led 34-30 at the midpoint of the final period but couldn’t put the win away.

Karlee Lynch led Grundy Center with a game-high 19 points, going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Raelyn Steinmeyer made a pair of 3-pointers on her way to eight points.

Payton Foster scored 13 points to lead Dike-New Hartford.

STC matmen win EM/GMG triangular

LE GRAND — The South Tama boys’ wrestling team won both of its matches at a non-conference triangular hosted by East Marshall/GMG on Thursday night.

South Tama won back-to-back duals to close the evening, beating Iowa Falls-Alden 38-29 and the host Mustangs 55-18. Iowa Falls-Alden ousted EM/GMG in the opening dual, 54-24.

A trio of Trojans went 2-0 on the mat during the double dual, as Clayton Babinat (144 pounds), Garrett Surman (150) and Marcus Bear (175) led the way for STC. Surman scored two wins by pinfall, Bear had a pin and a technical fall, while Babinat had a pin and a major decision.

East Marshall/GMG managed three match wins against South Tama, as Xavier Slifer (126), Jordan Meling (138) and Drew Wheater (190) all picked up pins. Wheater added a pin in the opener against the Cadets, and Jackson Nelson (165) got the Mustangs’ only other win against IFA.

MCC men stun Southeastern, 69-60

The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team overcame 17 turnovers to knock off Southeastern 69-60 in Thursday’s Iowa Community College Athletic Conference clash at the Student Activity Center.

MCC (10-14, 1-2) used a balanced scoring effort to pick up its first win in ICCAC Division I play. Justice Small scored 18 points, Ahmed Ibrahim had 15, Jayden Hill added 12, and Antoine Glasper and Tre’von Coney both scored nine points for the Tigers.

Ibrahim added game-highs of nine rebounds and five assists for MCC, which led 25-19 at the half before outscoring Southeastern 44-41 in the second half.

Marquiche Lewis scored a game-high 27 points to power the visiting Blackhawks (17-7, 1-2).

MCC is back at home on Saturday, hosting NIACC for a 3 p.m. game.

Tiger women tripped up by Iowa Lakes

ESTHERVILLE — The Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team managed just three points in the final quarter of a 49-43 loss to Iowa Lakes in Thursday’s Iowa Community College Athletic Conference contest.

MCC led 26-23 at the half before getting outscored in the third quarter, going into the fourth locked in a 40-all tie. Iowa Lakes (11-14, 5-8) emerged victorious by outscoring the Tigers 9-3 in the final frame.

Shenell Stewart scored a game-high 23 points to lead Marshalltown (13-11, 4-9), adding seven rebounds. Mia Sao-Martinez added 13 points and nine rebounds, but the rest of the team scored a combined seven points.

Gracelyn Deputy led Iowa Lakes with 16 points and seven boards. Morgan Bednarek added 13 points off the bench.

The MCC women return home to host Northeast for a conference game Saturday at 1 p.m.
