SPORTS SHORTS: Trojans’ dual season ends at Algona

ALGONA — West Marshall boys wrestling ended its dual season against the top-ranked team in Class 2A in a regional final at Algona on Tuesday.

The Trojans won a regional semifinal over Crestwood earlier in the night, 46-33, but were outmatched by the host Bulldogs, 58-16.

Urijah Courter and Jon Gonzalez started the dual against Crestwood with a technical fall and win by forfeit, but the Cadets led 16-11 after five weights.

The middle weights for the Trojans showed up in force as Kinnick Geers, Shane Hanford, Wade Weuve and Dawson Goodman racked up pinfall victories, with Ben Gonzalez adding a 17-2 technical fall, and the Trojans were up 40-16, adding a Skylar Hanford fall at heavyweight.

In the matchup with Algona, Jon Gonzalez scored a first-period pinfall at 120 pounds and Shane Hanford won a 16-5 major decision at 150 for West Marshall’s only two head-to-head wins; Urijah Courter added a win by forfeit at 113 pounds.

Algona was eighth at last year’s 2A state duals.

Next up for West Marshall is a 2A district tournament at Humboldt on Saturday, Feb. 15.

West Marshall boys tripped up by Roland-Story

STORY CITY — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team was held below 40 points for the first time in nearly two months, falling 42-37 to Roland-Story in Tuesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.

The Trojans (10-8, 7-7) had scored at least 42 points in every game aside from a 70-28 loss at Grand View Christian on Dec. 10, 2024.

West Marshall led Roland-Story by two going into the fourth quarter, 32-30, before getting outscored 12-5 in the final period.

DJ Ridout led the Trojans with 14 points. Lucas Barnes added eight points, and Noah DeSotel tallied seven points and a team-leading nine rebounds.

Jake Berggren scored 14 points and Eli Van Hove had 12 points to lead the host Norsemen (6-12, 6-8).
