Boyd joins Eilers, Kirkpatrick as IPSWA all-state selections

DES MOINES — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck and Grundy Center boys’ basketball teams made their way back to the state tournament, and the postseason honors reflect such a feat.
The Iowa Print Sports Writers Association named Grundy Center senior swingman Jalen Kirkpatrick as a repeat selection in Class 2A, while Gladbrook-Reinbeck senior forward Drew Eilers returned to the 1A squad in a vote of statewide media and coaches on Friday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Both were named second-team all-state after earning third-team laurels a year ago.
Eilers was joined by teammate Michael Boyd, who scored his first all-state accolade with selection to the 1A third team. It’s the first time Gladbrook-Reinbeck has had multiple all-state recipients since the 2014-15 team went a perfect 28-0 on the way to the state title and had three all-state honorees.
Eilers, a 6-foot-3 senior, averaged a team-leading 15.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game to help the Rebels to a 23-4 record that concluded with a loss to defending state champion Bellevue Marquette in Thursday’s 1A state semifinals. Eilers shot an impressive 60.2 percent from the field this season. He averaged 15.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game at state, including clutch free-throw shooting in the Rebels’ quarterfinal win over North Linn last Wednesday.
Boyd, a 6-5 senior forward, was the second-leading scorer and rebounder for G-R, averaging 15.4 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. He was second on the team in assists (3.2) and first in blocked shots (1.9) as the Rebels wrapped up their third-straight state tournament appearance with a trip to the semifinals for the first time since 2017.
Kirkpatrick missed a portion of the season with an injury but was still a pivotal part of the Spartans’ trek back to the Well. Grundy Center finished 22-3 after a state quarterfinal loss to Unity Christian.
Kirkpatrick averaged team-highs of 15.9 points and 7.9 rebounds per game in helping Grundy Center get back to state for the second year in a row. He added 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game, but the 6-6 guard missed out on 11 games over the course of the winter.
He shot a stellar 76.2 percent from the free-throw line and 51.7 percent from the field.
Kirkpatrick is Grundy Center’s first two-time all-state recipient since Trevor Hook earned back-to-back honors in 2009 and 2010.
West Des Moines Valley senior Trevin Jirak was named Mr. Iowa Basketball 2025 after helping to lead Valley (23-3) to its third-straight 4A state championship. Jirak, a 6-foot-9 center, averaged 16.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game this season, totalling 48 points and 34 rebounds in the Tigers’ three state tournament wins last week.
Jirak, a Northern Iowa commit, closed his prep career with 893 points and 582 rebounds.
