Hawkeyes outlast Spartans
INDIANAPOLIS — The Iowa women’s basketball team got a big boost down the stretch from freshman Ava Heiden to help the Hawkeyes defeat No. 24 Michigan State 74-61 in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament here Thursday night.
Lucy Olsen had a game-high 21 points to lead Iowa, which scored the last eight points to break open a close game. Taylor McCabe made four 3-pointers for 12 points, Hannah Stuelke had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Heiden chipped in 11 in a critical reserve role.
Olsen’s last of nine assists came on a 3-pointer from the corner for Kylie Feuerbach, which made it 73-61 with 53 seconds left.
Julia Ayrault had 17 points to lead Michigan State, the No. 6 seed. Grace VanSlooten added 12 points and 10 boards for the Spartans, and Ines Sotelo added 11 points.
The No. 11-seeded Hawkeyes will face No. 3 seed Ohio State (24-5) in Friday’s last quarterfinal at approximately 8:30 p.m.
