Iowa PBS, IHSAA reach agreement to broadcast select boys state finals
BOONE — The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) state finals in football, wrestling and basketball are moving to Iowa PBS beginning in the 2025-26 school year, announced in a joint press release on Friday.
The multi-year agreement will see the finals of the three most-watched boys high school sports broadcasted on statewide Iowa PBS as well as streaming for free through both Iowa PBS and the IHSAA websites.
The press release indicated that this agreement is a “cornerstone” of the IHSAA’s plan for free state tournament video, beginning with the football semifinals later this year.
“We are thrilled to partner with Iowa PBS to bring our football, wrestling and basketball state championship broadcasts to fans across the state,” said IHSAA executive director Tom Keating.
The IHSAA is set to end its contract with the Iowa High School Sports Network (IHSSN) at the end of the 2024-25 athletic year. The IHSSN has produced IHSAA state events for nearly 20 years for distribution to various commercial broadcast and cable television partners.
The IHSAA coverage is in addition to ongoing coverage of Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union championships for various sports already broadcast through Iowa PBS, and the broadcasting company will also produce special IHSAA programming highlighting student-athletes, sports and communities.
“The stories of Iowa student-athletes, teams, coaches, and communities are at the center of our Iowa PBS Sports coverage,” said Andrew Batt, executive director and general manager at Iowa PBS. “We are excited to extend our award-winning, in-depth broadcasts to the IHSAA and mutually ensure statewide access of these games across all 99 counties of Iowa and beyond. Every Iowan deserves an opportunity to witness these athletes pursue a championship on our state’s most extensive broadcast and streaming network.”
PBS will present football championships on Nov. 20-21, 2025 from the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, followed by the boys wrestling finals on Feb. 21, 2026 and boys basketball finals on March 13, 2026, both emanating from Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
