Bobcat duo clinches bid to run at Drake Relays
DES MOINES — John Moellers and Preston Johnson set the bar on Saturday, and they also met the mark to make the Drake Relays.
With their 1-2 finish in the 3,200-meter run on Saturday at the Jim Duncan Invitational at Drake Stadium, Marshalltown’s distance duo of Moellers and Johnson qualified for the 115th running of the Drake Relays, which will be back on the blue oval on April 23-26 in Des Moines.
The senior Moellers won Saturday’s race with a time of 9 minutes, 17.54 seconds, while the sophomore Johnson was second in 9:18.91. The Drake Relays Blue Standard time is 9:20.
The pair represented the Bobcats’ only top-10 finishes on the day. Aiden Smitherman scored 12th place in the long jump with his leap of 19 feet, 6 1/4 inches, and he also finished 17th in the 400 hurdles in 59.32.
Johnson and Moellers came in 14th and 17th, respectively, in the 1,600 with times of 4:32.88 and 4:34.75, while Ignacio Macias cleared 43-11 1/4 to place 17th in the shot put.
Two MHS boys’ relay teams finished in 16th place. The 4×400-meter relay foursome of Kieron Sharp, Carter Bell, Smitherman and Carson Wright clocked in at 3:47.89, while the shuttle hurdle relay squad of Johnny Plancher, Ethan Gorsuch, Fernando Garcia and Carson Daters timed in at 1:12.92.
The Bobcat girls were led by a 17th-place finish from the 4×800 foursome of Millie Heitmann, Drea Ceren, Mallory Meyeraan and Mattea Wright. Their time was 11:11.78.
Marshalltown had a trio of 20th-place finishes. Grace Christensen was 20th in the 100-meter dash in 13.39, the distance medley team of Mayaliz Heredia de Luna, Kamryn Price, Heitmann and Elyza Ceren finished in 5:03.44, while the 4×200 quartet of Niah Lott, Erandy Ibarra Madrigal, Price and Christensen timed in at 1:56.65.
The Bobcat 4×100 team of Lott, Camille Ceren, Geneva Spitzli and Christensen took 21st place in 54.74.
