Bobcat girls rip Hoover, beat Boone
DES MOINES — The Bobcat buzzsaw claimed two more victories on Thursday.
The Marshalltown girls’ tennis team trampled Des Moines Hoover before beating Boone in a spirited head-to-head clash that could have turned on the Bobcats during third-set super-tiebreakers.
Instead, MHS (5-0) won three out of five third-set showdowns and completed the day with a 2-0 showing.
Had the Toreadors (4-1) been able to win all of the three-set thrillers, it would have been Boone in the winner’s circle instead.
After dispatching host Des Moines Hoover in the day’s first dual, 11-0, Marshalltown marched out to a 4-2 lead against Boone through singles competition. Kennedy Feldman at No. 1, Kate Hauser and No. 3 and Lily Zahnd at No. 4 each claimed straight-set wins, and a three-set triumph from Reese Jensen at No. 5 kept the Bobcats surging in the right direction to end singles play.
Feldman was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Kaylee Kuehl, Hauser toppled Shannon Jenkins 6-2, 6-3, and Zahnd was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Juliana Lutz. Jensen ousted Ally Thompson in comeback fashion, winning 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, (10-7).
Kate Sandvick at No. 2 singles was unable to duplicate the comeback accomplishment of Jensen, falling in a three-set heartbreaker, 7-6 (10-8), 2-6, (10-7).
The Bobcats made good on two of the three doubles matches to go the distance, winning three-setters at Nos. 3 and 5 doubles to deliver the finishing blow against Boone.
Jensen and Ellie Downs scored a 2-6, 6-3, (11-9) comeback win at No. 3 doubles, while Karsyn Price and Bella Avise came from behind to beat Thompson and Rachel Ungs at No. 5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, (10-8).
Hauser and Zahnd breezed to a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 2, while Ellie Hughes and Rachel Jones racked up a 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 win over Michaella Anderson and Rozzie Stevenson at No. 4 doubles.
Feldman and Sandvick fought back to force a deciding third set at No. 1 doubles, but Boone’s Kuehl and Livi Schneider outlasted the Bobcat pairing, 7-5, 5-7, (10-7).
Marshalltown girls tennis gets back to action on Monday, entertaining Fort Dodge in an Iowa Alliance Conference North Division dual at the Marshalltown Court Complex.
