Bobcats breeze past Dodgers
MHS girls 6-0 after Alliance North victory
Marshalltown girls tennis continues to sail the winds of good fortune this spring.
The Bobcats remain unbeaten in team competition after defeating Fort Dodge, 9-2, on a breezy Monday at the Marshalltown Court Complex.
MHS improved to 6-0 on the season.
“We’re just having fun,” senior Lily Zahnd said. “Our practices are energetic, and everyone’s out there to have fun and compete, but in a positive way.”
Marshalltown swept Fort Dodge in doubles play, led by Kennedy Feldman and Kate Sandvick winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Zahnd and Kate Hauser rallied to a tiebreaker victory, 4-6, 6-0, 10-6, at No. 2 doubles.
“Our major challenge was hitting against the girl up front, the other one loved to play deep,” Zahnd said. “We were tryig to avoid that and hit it short or place it on the corners.”
The other three doubles matches were all straight-set wins for the Bobcats. MHS has only lost two doubles matches so far this season.
“All of our doubles have been doing great this season,” MHS head coach John Fiscus said. “We’ve changed a few things around in the top three just to get all the girls playing with each other because there’s a lot of similarities with the girls.”
In singles play, Marshalltown went 4-2 with Fort Dodge grabbing wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Feldman forced a third set with Fort Dodge’s No. 1 Manuela Rodriguez, but came up short as Rodriguez won 7-5, 3-6, 11-9.
“I think Kennedy just needs to realize that she’s improved so much in the past four years,” Fiscus said. “This was a perfect example of how she can play with anybody out there. It’s all a mindset, and she just needs to keep working at it and the points will go her way, she’s just got to get over that last little hump.”
Hauser, Zahnd and Reese Jensen all won in straight sets on Monday. Ellie Downs won a tiebreaker at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 10-5.
“The wind was not my friend at first but playing the net and hitting hard helped out a lot,” Zahnd said. “I was lobbing a lot to start and hitting it lightly and the wind would just take it and it wasn’t working well.”
The Bobcats’ chances at the Iowa Alliance North Division title will be on the line next Thursday at Ames. In the meantime, they’ll play a couple of South Division teams, starting with Ottumwa on Tuesday back at the Marshalltown courts. MHS defeated Ottumwa last year, 10-1.
