The Cyclones haven’t gotten the upper hand against the Hawkeyes in a few years, but Iowa State won Wednesday’s showdown in the transfer portal.
Arizona sophomore guard Jada Williams put her name in the transfer portal on March 24, and on Wednesday she announced her plans to transfer to Iowa State through her social media accounts.
A 5-foot-8 sophomore, Williams had visited Baylor, TCU and Iowa among other schools upon announcing her intent to transfer from Arizona a few days after the Wildcats were knocked out of the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament by Northern Arizona. Williams didn’t play in that final game.
The Kansas City, Mo., native is the first player the Cyclones have pulled from the transfer portal, less than two weeks after their NCAA Tournament loss to Michigan. Iowa State graduated just one player — point guard Emily Ryan — from this winter’s roster, making Williams the Cyclones’ biggest recruit of the offseason.
A former McDonald’s All-American, Williams was a member of the Pac-12 Conference’s All-Freshman Team in her first season in Tucson. She averaged 9.4 points and 2.3 assists per game in her collegiate debut, and as sophomore she upped her numbers to 12.7 points and 2.9 assists per contest.
Williams started in 58 of her 63 games played at Arizona and will likely insert into head coach Bill Fennelly’s starting lineup next season. Williams was the second-best free-throw shooter in the Big 12 Conference this year at 86.2 percent (75-of-87) and averaged 13.4 points per game during Big 12 play.
It’s a huge head-to-head win for the Cyclones over in-state rival Iowa, which has won eight of the last nine meetings with Iowa State, including three in a row. Williams was a five-star recruit out of La Jolla Country Day School in San Diego, touted as the No. 21 recruit in the same class as current Cyclones Addy Brown, Audi Crooks, Kelsey Joens and Arianna Jackson.
