IOWA CITY — New Iowa men’s basketball coach Ben McCollum has made his second splash in the transfer portal from outside of the state, landing 6-foot-9 power forward Alvaro Folgueiras from Robert Morris University.
Folgueiras was named the Horizon League’s Player of the Year after leading the Colonials to the regular season and conference tournament championships and an NCAA Tournament Berth. Robert Morris (26-9) was a No. 15 seed and fell in the first round to Alabama.
Folgueiras averaged 14.1 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.2 blocks per game to lead the Colonials in his sophomore campaign. He shot 54.8 percent from the field, including 41.3 percent from 3-point range, and was a 78.4 percent free-throw shooter.
To this point, McCollum’s first five transfer portal signees are former players of his from Drake, including highly touted point guard Bennett Stirtz. The Hawkeyes flipped former Northern Iowa commit Trevin Jirak from West Des Moines Valley last week, that after signing Kansas State shooting guard Brendan Hausen.
Folgueiras is a native of Spain who attended DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Fla., before committing to Robert Morris, a private university in suburban Pittsburgh.
The transfer was first reported by ESPN’s Jonathan Givony.
Folgueiras scored in double figures in 27 of his 35 games played last season for RMU, highlighted by a 35-point outburst against Northern Kentucky. He also had at least 10 rebounds in 17 games, and he was three assists shy of a triple-double in a win against Oakland.
Folgueiras is rated as the No. 6 power forward in the transfer portal by On3, and the No. 17 overall transfer.
