MHS boys blow past Fort Dodge
FORT DODGE — Aside from its one standout player, Fort Dodge simply couldn’t keep up with the Marshalltown boys’ tennis team.
The Bobcats blew the Dodgers’ doors off on Monday, sending Fort Dodge (1-5, 0-2) to its fifth consecutive loss with a 9-2 triumph in Iowa Alliance Conference North Division play.
Senior state placewinner Micah Flaherty was the one Dodger who refused to relent to MHS, winning at No. 1 singles and teaming up for a victory at No. 1 doubles as well. Flaherty is a three-time individual state medalist, highlighted by last year’s fourth-place finish, but Fort Dodge’s one-man show wasn’t enough to carry the day.
Marshalltown (5-0, 2-0) won every other match in straight sets, including four love-love triumphs in singles play.
Adam Boone turned back an early challenge from Fort Dodge’s Tate Balkenende in an eventual 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. Caleb Rasmussen, Jacob Christen, Elliot Kodis and Kyle Smith all won 6-0, 6-0.
Flaherty defeated the Bobcats’ No. 1 singles player Isaac Benscoter 6-1, 6-1, and he teamed with Balkenende for a 6-3, 6-3 win over Benscoter and Christen.
Marshalltown dominated the rest of doubles play, giving up no more than two games per match. Boone and Rasmussen prevailed 6-1, 6-1 over Aiden Recker and Mason Lundberg, while Tayven Dutton and Isaac Seberger won by the same score against Jaxon Price and Jayden Stanley.
Will Swartz and Smith captured a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4 doubles over Jaxton Jones and Trice Jakeman, while Evan Roush and Kodis scored a 6-0, 6-1 win over Aidan Russell and Corban McHone at No. 5.
Marshalltown’s four-match week continues today with an 11 a.m. showdown against Class 1A No. 4 Waverly-Shell Rock at the Marshalltown Court Complex. The Bobcats host Ottumwa, Des Moines Lincoln and Mason City for a double-dual on Thursday starting at noon.
