Marshalltown boys tennis tacked two more wins on a successful week, defeating Des Moines Lincoln and Ottumwa at the Marshalltown Court Complex on Thursday.

MHS beat both teams by 10-1 margins to improve to 8-0 overall for the season, and 4-0 this week.

“We’re doing really well,” Marshalltown junior Caleb Rasmussen said. “I was actually kind of surprised because we did lose quite a few good players last year, but everyone’s really stepped it up, and it’s been really cool to see.”

Isaac Benscoter led the way for the Bobcats at No. 1 singles with a pair of super tiebreaker wins; 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 over Hudson Christie of Des Moines Lincoln and 6-1, 2-6, 10-4 over Ottumwa’s Logan Storto.

His only loss came at No. 1 doubles with Jacob Christen against Lincoln’s top team of Christen and Liam Miller, with the Rails team winning 7-5, 7-6 with an 8-6 tiebreaker win to clinch that second set.

“Seems like Benscoter has been in about 20 tiebreakers this week,” MHS head coach James Christensen said. “He was bound to lose one eventually. He was coming off an awesome victory in singles and those Lincoln guys came to play, they had a really good game plan and it took our guys a little bit time of figure out what was going on, and by that time the first set was done, but they battled really well in the second set and it was just a matter of a point or two here and there that swayed it.”

Christensen also pointed out Adam Boone’s 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over Miller, part of a singles sweep for the Bobcats against Lincoln.

“He probably played his best singles match today, really even head and very patient with his game,” Christensen added. “And Caleb Rasmussen has been a very steady force at three for us, very low maintenance, I peek over every once in awhile and he keeps flipping numbers on his side (of the scoreboard), so I just let him do his thing and Elliot Kodis and Kyle Smith took care of business pretty quickly as well.”

Dominick Rath notched the only tally for Ottumwa on Thursday, 6-3, 7-5 winner over Boone at No. 2 singles.

Benscoter and Christen won at No. 1 doubles by default when an Ottumwa competitor had to retire late in the first set due to a strained abdomen muscle.

Kodis and Evan Roush have been particularly dominant this week at No. 5 doubles, Christensen said.

“They didn’t drop a game today, 24-0, and on the week they’ve only lost three or four total,” Christensen added. “It’s great to see those sophomores continue to grow and we’re playing really well at those No. 4, No. 5 doubles spots.”

Marshalltown heads to Des Moines Roosevelt next Tuesday, and then gears up for a major Alliance clash with Ames back in Marshalltown on April 24.

“We got better this week, and 8-0 is a great spot to be in,” MHS head coach James Christensen said. “But we’ve got a long road ahead and next week is huge with Ames, that’s probably going to determine the conference championship for us and we’ve got three days of practice to get ready for it. I know the guys are pretty happy with where we are right now, but we’ve got to play better to take down Ames.”
