SPORTS SHORTS: Mustang girls third at own track and field meet

LE GRAND — The East Marshall girls’ track and field team took third place at its own 12-team invitational on Thursday, scoring 75 points.

The Mustangs trailed only Newton (159) and Roland-Story (90) in the meet. BCLUW came away with 54 points for seventh place, South Tama scored 27 for 10th, and Gladbrook-Reinbeck tallied 24 points for 11th.

East Marshall had a pair of first-place finishes, with Ashtyn Wheater taking the shot put with a heave of 40 feet, 1 1/4 inches. The Mustangs also won the distance medley relay with a combined time of 4 minutes, 37.04 seconds.

Cora Talbert placed second in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.57, and Sydney Hull took third in the 800 in 2:33.85.

BCLUW scored a pair of silvers. Kalia Stover was second in the 1,500 in 5:24.19, and Grace Farnsworth was second in the shot put at 34-5. Morgan Bergman added third place in the discus (98-11).

South Tama’s top result was a third-place effort from the 4×100 relay in 52.54.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Kennedy Brant won the high jump by clearing 5-5 1/2, and the Rebels’ sprint medley was second in 1:59.21.

Spartan boys lead locals at Hudson Relays

HUDSON — Grundy Center boys track and field led a cast of area teams at the Hudson Relays on Thursday, scoring 125 points to place second behind only Denver (151).

South Tama was eighth (35), BCLUW took ninth (33.5), West Marshall was 11th (24.5), North Tama placed 17th (6.5), and Gladbrook-Reinbeck was 18th (no points).

The Spartans won seven events and scored four silvers as well. Judd Jirovsky topped the field in the 200-meter dash (23.01 seconds) as well as the long jump (19 feet, 7 inches); Emerson Vokes claimed the 3,200 (9:42.56); and Grundy Center relays won the 4×100, sprint medley, distance medley and shuttle hurdle.

Pete Lebo was second in the 110 high hurdles and the 400 lows, and Lake Schrage was second in the 400. The Spartan 4×200 relay took second as well.

South Tama was topped by third-place finishes for Josiah Houghton in the 400 hurdles (1:01.71) and Timmothy Chandonia in the shot put (43-11). Barrett Jesina was fourth in the 3,200 (10:22.61), as was the Trojans’ 4×100.

Cayden White claimed gold for BCLUW with his win in the 1,600 (4:38.22). The Comets’ distance medley team took fourth.

West Marshall got a runner-up result from its sprint medley squad (1:37.16). The Trojans’ 4×200 took fourth (1:34.61), as did Ryder Gile in the high jump (5-8).

North Tama’s top result was a fourth-place finish from Ty Guthrie in the discus (139-1), while Caleb Bowser led Gladbrook-Reinbeck with a 10th-place finish in the 800 (2:24.33).
