SPORTS SHORTS: Sixth-place finishes lead MHS boys at Ankeny

ANKENY — The Marshalltown boys’ track and field team tallied just three points to place last out of 10 teams at the Ankeny Invite on Tuesday night.

Ignacio Macias picked up a point for his sixth-place finish in the shot put, clearing 46 feet, 6 inches with his best heave. Teammate Owen Eaton took seventh with a toss of 44-10.

A pair of Bobcat relays placed sixth as well. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Fernando Garcia, Aiden Smitherman, Carson Daters and Ethan Gorsuch scored a point with their combined time of 1 minute, 10.62 seconds, while the quartet of Carter Nunn, Kade Randall, Myles Goldman and Parker Gooding earned sixth in 8:46.71.

The Bobcats’ 4×200 relay team of Smitherman, Evan Anderson, Kieron Sharp and Isacc Ceniceros scored seventh in 1:36.57.

Nunn and Gooding finished 8-9 in the 800-meter run with respective times of 2:07.08 and 2:07.95. Randall came in ninth in the 1,600 (4:57.71), while three more relays — sprint medley, 4×100 and 4×400 — finished ninth as well.

Shuttle hurdle relay paces Bobcat girls at Prairie

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Marshalltown girls’ track and field team finished last out of eight teams with 27 points on Tuesday at the Cedar Rapids Prairie Invite.

The Bobcats’ top finish came from the shuttle hurdle relay team of Chloe Hoogensen, Geneva Spitzli, Lorelai Villarreal and Anela Villarreal, which clocked in at a season-best 1 minute, 22.39 seconds for fifth place.

Marshalltown’s 4×200-meter relay team of Niah Lott, Spitzli, Kamryn Price and Grace Christensen scored sixth in 2:02.18, and the 4×400 foursome of Millie Heitmann, Price, Erandy Ibarra Madrigal and Spitzli placed sixth in 4:49.03.

Anessa Morrison made off with sixth place in the 3,000 (12:42.28), while Christensen tallied seventh place in both the 100 (13.35) and the long jump (14-9).

The Bobcats’ 4×800 relay team of Heitmann, Drea Ceren, Mallory Meyeraan and Mattea Wright took seventh in 11:26.14, and the distance medley squad of Mayaliz Heredia de Luna, Ibarra Madrigal, Adele Beek and Elyza Ceren was seventh in 5:28.51.

BCLUW girls take team title at Spartan Relays

MAXWELL — BCLUW girls track and field topped the team standings at the Collins-Maxwell Spartan Relays on Tuesday.

The Comets scored 114 points to finish ahead of Martensdale-St. Mary’s (103) and Collins-Maxwell (93). GMG was sixth with 29 points and Meskwaki finished eighth with 14 points.

BCLUW won four events; Klayre Gallentine in the 100 hurdles, Morgan Bergman in the discus throw, Grace Farnsworth in the shot put and the 4×800 relay with the quartet of Abby Kemp, Chloe Switzer, Raegan Crawford and Kalia Stover.

The Comets also doubled up team points in the throwing events as Adrienne Caster finished second in the discus and Bergman third in the shot put.

GMG’s Gracie Peak finished second in the 200- and 400-meter running events; Arianna Pierce earned silver in the shot put.

Meskwaki’s Nahliya Pushetonequa claimed gold in the 200-meter dash.

West Marshall was the top boys team at the event, finishing second with 91 points, two points shy of champs Collins-Maxwell. BCLUW was third with 85 points, GMG fifth with 51 and Meskwaki eighth with 10 points.

Jace Eich was the 400-meter champ for the Trojans and was the anchor of the winning sprint medley along with Kinnick Geers, Calvin Streeter and Evan Siegert. Geers, Streeter, Siegert and Erick Rosas Canchola also had the top time in the distance medley relay.

BCLUW boys winners included Maddin Helms in the 200, Cayden White in the 800 and Emmitt Petermeier in the shot put.

GMG’s Jay Bessman won the discus throw.

Spartans boys scoop relay gold at Jesup

JESUP — Grundy Center boys track and field won four relay events to propel the Spartans to a third-place team finish at the J-Hawk Invitational on Tuesday.

Denver won the team title with 137 points, followed by Union with 104.5 points.

Brody Zinkula and Brayden Davie were on three of the four winning relays. Ryker Thoren, Zinkula, Grant Newton and Davie won the sprint medley relay; Devin Hinders, Zinkula, Newton and Davie were first in the 4×200, Tiernan Vokes, Dayton Myers, Newton and Davie won the 4×400 and Pete Lebo, Hinders, Jacob Hoy and Vokes were winners in the shuttle hurdle.

The 4×100 relay finished second, with Hinders, Zinkula, Newton and Davie clocking in at 44.45, which is the current cutoff for qualification in the event at the Drake Relays — the deadline for qualifying is at the end of the night on Thursday — Grundy Center competes at a meet at Hudson that night.

Grundy Center girls 3rd at Hudson Relays

HUDSON — Grundy Center girls track and field finished third out of 16 teams at a Hudson track and field meet on Tuesday.

The Spartans scored 82 points, trailing champions Decorah (126) and runners-up West Delaware (97.5).

Maddy Hendershot won the 400-meter dash and Grace Storjohann was tops in the 800-meter run for the Spartans.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Kennedy Brant was the other area champion, clearing the bar at 5 feet, 5 inches in the high jump.

South Tama’s 4×200 led the Trojans with a sixth-place finish.
