SPORTS SHORTS: Throwers lead MHS boys at Dodger Relays

FORT DODGE — An abridged version of the Marshalltown boys’ track and field team finished last in a field of eight at the Dodger Relays on Monday at Dodger Stadium.

The Bobcats finished with 19 points in the invitational. Waukee Northwest (167) won the meet.

Most of Marshalltown’s points came in the field events, as Jaxson Hinkle bagged bronze in the discus with a top heave of 131 feet. Ignacio Macias tossed the shot put 46-6 1/2 for fourth place.

The Bobcats earned fifth place in the 4×100-meter relay with a time of 49.30 seconds. The 4×200 (1:45.72) and sprint medley (1:47.76) relays both took seventh place.

Mustang boys score second at own invitational

LE GRAND — The East Marshall boys’ track and field team finished second in its own Mustang Relays on Monday night, trailing only PCM in the 12-team invitational.

The Mustangs scored 101 points for silver, trailing PCM’s 119.5. English Valleys (94.5) finished a half-point ahead of South Tama (94) for third. Gladbrook-Reinbeck was 12th with eight points.

East Marshall managed second place despite just one event victory. Blake Neuroth topped the field in the 400-meter hurdles with his time of 1 minute, 0.07 seconds.

Runner-up results for the Mustangs came from Cael Curphy in the high jump (5 feet, 8 inches) and the 400 (53.38), the shuttle hurdle relay (Neuroth, Eli Burns, Chandler Curtis, Jake Farrington; 1:05.20), the 4×200 (Neuroth, Shaston Gummert, Gavin Gaschler, Kaden Good; 1:41.09), and Farrington in the 110 high hurdles (16.17).

South Tama’s top earner was Timmothy Chandonia, who won the shot put (43-11 1/2) and the discus (120). Cody Blocker was second in the 100 (11.71), Barrett Jesina was third in the 1,600 (5:09.67), and the Trojans’ 4×100 relay of Blocker, Michael Henry, Tyrus Clegg and Nick Upah was third (46.08).

G-R’s 4×200 relay got half of the Rebels’ points for placing fifth, as Cole Gramer, Drew Eilers, Nathan Smiley and Joshua Utterback timed in at 1:43.49. Hunter Roberts got the other half by scoring fifth in the shot put (39-8).
