Marshalltown girls tennis continued its undefeated season with an 8-3 win over Des Moines Roosevelt at the Marshalltown Court Complex on Tuesday night.

The Bobcats won four of six singles matches and clinched the match before the top three doubles teams took the court, improving to 8-0 this season. Roosevelt fell to 4-6.

MHS hasn’t lost a regular-season dual to an Alliance opponent in almost two years, a string of 14 consecutive victories.

“It’s fun to keep winning and winning,” MHS sophomore Kate Sandvick said. “Our team chemistry is just really, really good, we all get along well.”

Sandvick won her No. 2 singles match, 6-3, 6-4, improving to 6-2 overall. Her doubles teammate, senior Kate Hauser, moved to 8-0 at No. 3 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win.

“I worked on singles in the offseason since I hadn’t played it before,” Hauser said. “I was prepared coming into the season and my serve has really been coming together, and I’ve been trying to get up at the net a lot.”

Sandvick said there were some initial growing pains coming up from JV play last year.

“There’s a bit of a learning curve,” she added. “You can’t just hit it right at girls, you have to pick your spots, hitting it short, hitting it deep, moving them around, changing speeds, and that’s really something I’ve been working on, and getting a better serve has really improved my singles game.”

The two Kates took care of business at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, 6-2 over Dinah Vance and Sophia Whitehead.

“We hang out a lot off the court, so that definitely helps us on the court,” Hauser said of Sandvick. “We get along well and she plays nicely.”

MHS head coach John Fiscus added, “they feed off each other perfectly, and as long as they’re happy, I’m happy. They’re a good team.”

Kennedy Feldman battled at No. 1 singles against another tough opponent, with Scarlett Brown winning 7-5, 6-2. Brown was a singles state qualifier last season, going 1-2 at the Class 2A tournament in Johnston.

Brown and Lillian From defeated Feldman and Lily Zahnd, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles.

“Kennedy had some really good matches tonight and just came out on the losing end of them,” Fiscus said. “She keeps improving though, especially in her singles, been really pleased with her there. That was really good competition for her.”

Zahnd and Reese Jensen were the other singles victors for the Bobcats on Tuesday. Jensen and Ellie Downs won their doubles match in straight sets, as did the teams of Ellie Hughes and Rachel Jones, and Karsyn Price and Bella Avise.

If forecasted rain holds off, the Bobcats will head to Ames for a huge clash on Thursday. Otherwise, MHS will be gearing up for a busy week next week with two home duals against Southeast Polk and Des Moines Lincoln on Monday and Tuesday and an Ankeny tournament on Friday, May 2.

“We’ve been doing really well,” Hauser said. “We have fun, we work hard in practice and it’s just really going well.”
