Two more Bulldogs join McCollum’s Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY — The Hawkeyes will dress in their fashionable black and gold, but the men’s basketball roster will have a decidedly blue hue next winter.

New Iowa men’s basketball coach Ben McCollum announced on Friday that two more of his former players from Drake have signed scholarship offers to join the Hawkeyes.

Isaia Howard and Tavion Banks both joined on with McCollum’s new squad, making it five players who have transferred from Des Moines to Iowa City to follow their former coach.

Howard came off the bench in 30 of Drake’s 35 games this season, averaging 4.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound guard will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Howard scored a career-high 21 points in Drake’s win over Southern Illinois in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The former Missouri Class 2A Player of the Year from Plattsburg, Mo., was a three-time first-team all-state selection who scored 3,001 career points to go with 541 steals in his prep career.

Banks, a 6-7, 200-pound swingman from Kansas City, Mo., was named the MVC’s Sixth Man of the Year and captain of the All-Bench Team after averaging 10.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game for Drake this past season.

Banks played in 34 of 35 games and started only once for the Bulldogs, who won a school-record 31 games. He shot 52 percent from the field and 70.5 percent from the free-throw line while also ranking second on the team in rebounding and third in scoring.

Banks earned his way onto the MVC All-Tournament Team after helping Drake secure the title and the team’s third-straight NCAA Tournament berth. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

Howard and Banks represent five former Drake players on the Hawkeye roster as of Friday, joining Bennett Stirtz, Cam Manyawu and Kael Combs.

Starting at $4.38/week.
